Year Manager (Temporary to Perm) - Barrow-in-Furness

Location: Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria

Contract Type: Full-Time, Temporary with a view to Permanent

Start Date: September

Salary: Competitive / Negotiable based on experience

About the Role

Are you an energetic and resilient professional looking to make a genuine impact on student outcomes?

A large, progressive secondary school in the Barrow-in-Furness area is seeking a dedicated Year Manager to join their pastoral team this September. Working with a specific year group, you will play a crucial role in bridging the gap between academic learning and pastoral welfare, supporting students to overcome barriers to education and thrive.

This position is offered on a temporary basis initially, with a clear view to transitioning into a permanent contract for the right individual.

Key Responsibilities

Pastoral Leadership: Serve as a key point of contact for students, parents, and external agencies regarding day-to-day welfare, behaviour, and personal development.

Behaviour & Attendance Tracking: Monitor and analyse attendance, punctuality, and behaviour data to implement early interventions and improve engagement.

Student Support: Work closely with vulnerable students, helping them manage social-emotional challenges and supporting SEN or safeguarding teams where required.

Collaboration: Partner closely with Year Leaders, Form Tutors, and teaching staff to cultivate a positive, focused learning environment across the year group.

Candidate Requirements

Experience: Previous background working with secondary-school-aged children (e.g., as a Year Manager, Pastoral Support Officer, Youth Worker, or Senior Teaching Assistant).

Skills: Exceptional communication and conflict-resolution skills, with a natural ability to build trusting relationships with teenagers.

Mindset: Firm, fair, and empathetic approach to managing student behaviour and promoting high expectations.

Compliance: Must be willing to undergo an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

What the School Offers

A supportive, collaborative leadership and pastoral structure.

Ongoing professional development and training opportunities.

A direct pathway from a temporary assignment to a permanent staff contract.
