Job Description Workshop Technician

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic, efficient and motivated individual to join the Transport Services Team within Community Services.

JOB SUMMARY: Workshop Technician Carry out routine maintenance and repairs of a varied fleet of vehicles which cover multiple services across the authority, including Plant vehicles and specialist equipment.

Reporting to the Workshop Manager, the successful applicant will be responsible to undertake inspections, repairs and maintenance on all our vehicles and any specialist equipment, the applicant must have knowledge of working to standards set out by the DVSA (Driving vehicle standards agency).

There is a requirement to work a rotating shift pattern, and cover an out of hours call out.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a flexible and organised approach to their work and have good communication and interpersonal skills.

To maintain a customer service excellence ethos. To engage proactively with customers.

To undertake inspections, repairs and maintenance of all council vehicles and specialist equipment to DVSA standards, Vehicle Manufacturers and Council Standards.

To ensure that all work undertaken is done so safely, to a high standard, being carried out effectively and efficiently within the Service’s and manufacturers prescribed guidelines/procedures and any current legislation.

To undertake all types of mechanical work including bodywork/chassis modifications.

To undertake all types of electrical work including diagnosing/fault finding using computer diagnostic equipment, adjustment and rectification via the use of handheld computer equipment.

To be flexible and carry out remedial work as required this may mean reacting at short notice, this is so we continue to deliver our high levels of service to our customers.

To work with minimal supervision and take responsibility for their own work, this may mean assisting others and helping apprentice ‘achieve their goals.

To assist in the control of workshop equipment repairs and defect reporting, including annual tests, and calibration.

To evaluate/authorise parts expenditure prior to ordering any parts

To undertake shift work and to work a call out rota outside of normal working hours to meet the business needs.

To maintain all working areas in a safe, clean and tidy manner and ensure a high standard is maintained.

There will be a requirement to become an MOT tester and carry out MOT and Taxi tests to the standards required by the DVSA (Driving vehicle standards agency)

The applicant will ideally hold a City and Guilds level 3 or equivalent qualification in motor vehicle or be able to demonstrate the relevant knowledge and experience relevant to the post and be able to work as an individual with minimal supervision and be able to work as part of a team.

A current Large Goods Vehicle class ‘C’ licence and MOT nominated tester qualifcation class 4/5 & 7 would be an advantage.
