Job Title: Vehicle Technician
Location: Bury St Edmunds (IP32)
Salary: £35,391
Hours: 37.5 per week (Monday to Friday between 7am and 11pm on a rota basis)
Length of the contract: Temporary to Permanent

Gi Group are now seeking to appoint an experienced Vehicle Technician to our Public Sector client based in Bury St Edmunds. The Vehicle Technician will be responsible for the efficient maintenance and repair of a fleet of vehicles, ensuring they remain in a safe and operational condition to support the high-paced delivery of 24/7 healthcare vehicles. The postholder will also utilise their advanced technical skills and expertise to maximise vehicle availability by independently diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving complex mechanical and electrical issues across a range of vehicles, including ambulances, patient transport vehicles, and administrative vehicles.

Duties of the Vehicle Technician

Conduct comprehensive inspections and diagnostics on a variety of vehicles to identify faults and malfunctions.
Perform advanced mechanical, electrical, and electronic repairs, including engine and transmission overhauls, brake system repairs, and diagnostic troubleshooting, and using specialised equipment.
Utilise diagnostic software and tools to analyse vehicle systems and interpret fault codes.
Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks, including servicing, oil changes, and component replacements, in accordance with manufacturer specifications and Health and Safety Regulations.
Liaise with external suppliers and contractors for the procurement of parts and equipment, ensuring cost-effective solutions and timely repairs.
Keep accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts usage, labour hours, and vehicle histories.
Carry out MOT inspections/repairs as required.
Communicate with clinical and operational users to gain a full understanding of the nature of fault or problem with the vehicle and equipment. Assess the seriousness of the issues and implications and respond appropriately to the urgency of the requests.
Analyse diagnostic data, interpret error codes, and perform tests to pinpoint the root cause of problems. You will need to have a combination of technical knowledge, experience, and problem-solving skills.
The post holder will be required to identify problems and faults, then carry out the necessary repairs or replacements. This will involve tasks such as replacing faulty components, repairing wiring, adjusting engine timing, or recalibrating sensors.
All post holders have a responsibility to report risks such as clinical and non-clinical accidents or incidents promptly. They are expected to be familiar with the organisation's use of Risk Assessments to predict and control risk, as well as the Incident Reporting System for learning from mistakes and near misses in order to improve services.

Role Criteria

IMI Level 3 Diploma in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair or equivalent.
Knowledge of procedures for mechanical/electrical maintenance and repair to BTEC/HNC, or City and Guilds, plus relevant training or equivalent.
Driving Licence with C1/D1 categories, courses, significant experience of driving vehicles larger than a family saloon car.
Have extensive, specialist knowledge and experience of safety practices and techniques in motor vehicle repair.
Proficiency in the use of diagnostic equipment and software, demonstrating the ability to interpret diagnostic data and make informed repair decisions.
Strong knowledge of software systems related to diagnostic tools and equipment.
Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex vehicle issues efficiently and effectively.
Significant experience working as a vehicle technician, with a focus on diagnosing and repairing a diverse range of mechanical and electrical systems.
Previous experience in a business vehicle maintenance environment.
Extensive experience in vehicle mechanical engineering.
Hands-on experience in current methodologies of mechanical maintenance.
