The Role – Teaching Assistant

We are looking for a confident and experienced Teaching Assistant to join a dynamic Primary SEMH school on a long-term basis. This is a rewarding Teaching Assistant opportunity to make a real difference, providing both 1:1 intervention and in-class support for pupils with SEMH, ASD, and challenging behaviour.

In this Teaching Assistant role, you will play a key part in helping pupils engage with their learning, manage their emotions, and develop positive behaviours. As a Teaching Assistant you will work closely with teaching staff to deliver tailored support, both academically and emotionally, ensuring each child is supported to reach their full potential.

The ideal Teaching Assistant will be calm, resilient, and patient, with a genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs. A proactive approach and the ability to build strong, trusting relationships are essential. Team Teach training is highly desirable for this Teaching Assistant role.

The School – Teaching Assistant

This Southwark-based specialist primary setting supports children with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs. Pupils often face challenges with emotional regulation, communication, and building relationships, with behaviour understood as a form of communication. Many have experienced adverse childhood experiences and may have been excluded from mainstream education, arriving with low confidence and disengagement from learning.

The school provides a small, nurturing, and therapeutic environment, with classes of around eight pupils and a strong focus on personalised, creative teaching approaches. Alongside the National Curriculum, pupils benefit from a range of therapeutic support, including art and music therapy, ELSA, and speech and language interventions. The dedicated staff team are committed to rebuilding confidence, supporting emotional wellbeing, and helping every child re-engage and succeed in their learning journey.
