Description:

Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Teaching Assistant (with a responsibility for a pupil with vision impairment) to start August 2024 on a fixed-term appointment until August 2025 in the first instance. 

Main purpose of the role: In this role you will be expected to provide guidance on the management of the named pupil. This may include advice on specialist ICT resources, specialist equipment, special considerations for examinations and the production of adaptations to enable the pupil with a visual impairment to gain full access to the curriculum. The post-holder will establish productive working relationships with the named pupil; acting as a role model and setting high expectations.

Key Responsibilities:

Assessing the needs of the pupil and use detailed knowledge and specialist skills to support pupil learning;

Planning, preparing and modifying a variety of educational materials to meet the individual needs of the pupil;

Working with the pupil in a range of learning environments, within the classroom, in groups or 1:1 as appropriate;

Delivering specified learning activities for the named pupil as appropriate and record and monitor progress;

Promoting the pupil’s independence and self-advocacy; employing strategies to recognise and reward achievement of self-reliance;

Providing information, guidance and support on visual impairment to the named pupil’s teachers;

Encouraging the pupil to interact and work cooperatively with others and engage in specified activities;

Providing feedback to the pupil in relation to progress and achievement;

Supporting the role of the parents in their child’s learning and to contribute to meetings with parents relating to progress, achievement and transition;

Opportunity to work with other neurodiverse pupils.

Person Specification:

The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas:

Excellent communication skills;

Good time management skills;

Highly organised;

Emotional intelligence and empathy;

Ability to face and overcome challenging situations;

A flexible and ‘can-do’ attitude;

Experience of working with people with disabilities is desirable, but not essential.

Safeguarding Responsibilities:

This role will involve daily contact with pupils and you will be engaging in regulated activity relevant to children.

All staff and volunteers have a responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for who you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.

Hours of Work: This is a term-time (35 weeks) appointment, working 20 hours per week. The hours of work will be dependent on the pupils timetable and are to be discussed at interview. This is a fixed-term appointment until August 2025 in the first instance, anticipated to start at the end of August 2024.

Remuneration: A salary in the range of £10,500- £12,000 per annum will be offered for this role, depending on experience
