About Say Aphasia

Say Aphasia runs support groups across the UK for people with aphasia, a language and communication disability caused by a brain injury such as a stroke. Aphasia affects over 350,000 people in the UK, but very few people have heard of it.

We are the only aphasia charity set up by people with aphasia, for people with aphasia. We help members adapt to a new way of life and rebuild their independence and confidence.

Aphasia is caused by injury to the brain, such as a stroke. It affects access to language, which can make following conversations, speaking, reading and writing difficult.

The role

We're looking for volunteers to join our new drop-in group in Sherborne. You'll help the group run smoothly, support members with communication, and use your IT skills to take a register of attendance.

It's a good fit if you want to do something useful in your community and build some experience along the way. No prior knowledge of aphasia is needed — we'll train you.

What you'll be doing

Providing companionship and support to group members, particularly those living with aphasia
Helping organise activities that encourage social interaction and engagement
Communicating with members so their needs are understood and met
Helping keep the group a safe and welcoming space for everyone
Working alongside other volunteers to help the group run well

What you'll bring

Strong communication skills and the ability to engage with people from a range of backgrounds
Confidence using IT and common software applications
A compassionate and patient approach
An understanding of aphasia is desirable but not essential — training will be given

What you'll get

Full training in aphasia and communication support
Out-of-pocket expenses paid
Experience of working directly with people living with a communication disability
The chance to help set up and shape a brand new group in Sherborne

You may have experience of the following: Support Group Assistant, Support Group Volunteer,
Community Volunteer, Befriender, Stroke Support Volunteer, Peer Support Volunteer, Drop-in Group Volunteer, Communication Support Volunteer, Charity Volunteer, Group Facilitator Volunteer.
