Job Title: Sub Agent - Civil Engineering

Location: East Sussex / South East England

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience) + Package

Role Overview

We are seeking an ambitious Sub Agent to join a leading principal civil engineering contractor delivering a high-profile, multi-million-pound coastal restoration project along the South Coast.

Reporting directly to the Project Manager, this role is key to bridging technical engineering oversight with daily operational site delivery. You will manage daily progress, subcontractor performance, short-term scheduling, quality compliance, and temporary works across a complex scheme encompassing structural steel/cast-iron refurbishment, concrete repairs, marine/coastal civil engineering, and public realm works on a sensitive, Grade II*-listed heritage asset.

Key Responsibilities

Support the Site/Project Manager in managing day-to-day site operations and driving progress according to the 3-to-4 week look-ahead programmes.

Coordinate, direct, and manage specialist sub-contractors covering structural metalwork restoration, deep foundations, concrete repairs, and public realm reconfigurations.

Oversee site engineers, ensuring accurate setting out, levels control, and timely as-built data capture across all site packages.

Review, implement, and monitor Method Statements, Risk Assessments (RAMS), and safe systems of work for complex construction activities.

Manage temporary works procedures, acting as or working closely with the Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC) to ensure compliance and sign-offs on site.

Drive site quality assurance, taking ownership of Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), permits to work, material approvals, and quality control documentation.

Lead daily site briefings, tool box talks, and progress reviews with sub-contractors and directly employed site staff.

Maintain rigorous health, safety, and environmental standards, particularly managing risks associated with public-adjacent and sensitive coastal environments.

Keep comprehensive daily site records, track variations, and compile progress reports for client and engineering meetings.

Candidate Requirements

HNC, HND, or Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.

SMSTS (or SSSTS with proven experience stepping up) and a valid CSCS Card.

Proven track record operating as a Sub Agent or Senior Site Engineer with a recognised principal civil engineering contractor.

Direct experience delivering structural civil engineering, reinforced concrete, structural steelwork, or marine/coastal infrastructure projects.

Strong technical background with setting out experience and a deep understanding of engineering control and CAD drawings.

Sound working knowledge of temporary works coordination and safety regulations (TWC qualification is highly advantageous).

Experience working on historic structure restorations, listed assets, or complex cast-iron/masonry refurbishments is desirable.

Strong organizational, communication, and team management skills with a proactive approach to problem-solving.
