SQL Support Engineer

A UK-based organisation is seeking an experienced and technically capable SQL Support Engineer to join its IT and application support team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong SQL Server, infrastructure, networking, and application support expertise who enjoys solving complex technical problems and supporting business-critical systems.

You will play a key role in maintaining and improving database and server environments, supporting application deployments, troubleshooting production issues, and working closely with development and infrastructure teams to deliver reliable, high-performing systems.

This role suits someone who is proactive, hands-on, and comfortable working across SQL Server, infrastructure, networking, and application support.

Key Responsibilities

Administer, support, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server environments, including high availability systems

Install, configure, and maintain Windows Server environments

Participate in a 24/7 remote on-call rota following training

Troubleshoot database, infrastructure, networking, and application issues

Perform application installations, upgrades, and configuration changes

Support deployment and implementation of new systems and applications

Monitor system performance and proactively resolve incidents

Collaborate with developers and third-party vendors to resolve technical issues

Manage server builds, patching, maintenance, and environment configuration

Support backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity processes

Maintain technical documentation, procedures, and configurations

Assist with networking issues including DNS, VPNs, firewalls, and connectivity

Participate in system testing, releases, and change management activities

Skills & Experience Required

Strong experience administering and supporting Microsoft SQL Server environments

Experience working with SQL Server high availability, maintenance, and performance troubleshooting

Strong experience administering Windows Server environments

Solid understanding of networking concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, and firewalls

Proven troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across databases, infrastructure, and applications

Experience implementing and configuring business applications

Ability to work effectively with development and support teams

Experience supporting production and business-critical systems

Knowledge of server monitoring, maintenance, and operational best practices

Strong communication and documentation skills

Desirable Experience

VMware or Hyper-V virtualization technologies

Exposure to Azure or AWS cloud platforms

PowerShell scripting or automation experience

IIS, application hosting, or middleware platform experience
