Software Design Engineer

Location: Burton-on-Trent (Office Based)
Salary: £50,000 - £65,000

The Opportunity

A well-established engineering manufacturer is looking to recruit an experienced Software Design Engineer to join its growing engineering team.

This is an excellent opportunity to play a key role in the design and development of software for technically advanced electro-mechanical products. Working closely with mechanical, electrical and systems engineers, you'll be involved throughout the full product lifecycle, from concept and design through to testing, commissioning and continuous product improvement.

Key Responsibilities

* Design, develop and maintain embedded software for industrial control systems and machinery.

* Produce software architecture, specifications and technical documentation.

* Develop, test, debug and validate software to ensure reliability, performance and compliance.

* Support system integration, commissioning and product validation activities.

* Collaborate closely with electrical, mechanical and systems engineering teams.

* Investigate software faults, undertake root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.

* Ensure software is developed in accordance with relevant safety, quality and engineering standards.

* Contribute to continuous improvement of coding standards, software development processes and engineering toolchains.

* Provide technical input into project planning, design reviews and engineering estimates.

* Maintain software version control and revision management across multiple products.

* Develop and support cloud-based IoT and telematics solutions for remote monitoring of equipment performance, safety and reliability.

About You

You'll be an experienced Software Design Engineer with a background in industrial, embedded or control systems.

Ideally, you'll have:

* Degree qualified in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

* 5+ years' experience in software design and development.

* Strong programming skills using C, C++, Python, Parker ICAN or similar.

* Experience with embedded software, real-time operating systems or industrial control systems.

* Good understanding of the software development lifecycle, version control and configuration management.

* Experience integrating software with hardware and electro-mechanical systems.

* Knowledge of cloud-based IoT platforms and telematics would be advantageous.

* Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills.

* A structured, methodical approach with excellent attention to detail.

* Ability to work collaboratively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.

What's On Offer

* £50,000 - £65,000 salary depending on experience.

* Office-based role in Burton-on-Trent.

* 37-hour week with an early finish every Friday.
