Freelance Site / Section Engineer (Major Structures & Bridges)
Contract Type: Freelance Contract (Inside IR35)
Duration: Initial 3 Months
Rate: £480 - £500 per day (Inside IR35)
Location: South West
The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Freelance Site / Section Engineer to support the delivery of a major infrastructure project involving large-scale structures and bridge works.
This is an excellent opportunity for a contractor with a proven background in major civil engineering projects, capable of managing site engineering activities, setting out, quality assurance, and coordinating construction works safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Setting out and surveying for structures and bridge works.
Managing day-to-day engineering activities on site.
Ensuring works are delivered in line with drawings, specifications, and programme requirements.
Producing and maintaining QA documentation, ITPs, and as-built records.
Managing technical queries and liaising with design teams.
Monitoring subcontractor performance and site progress.
Supporting temporary works, permits, and safe systems of work.
Driving high standards of quality, safety, and environmental compliance.
Essential Experience
Previous experience as a Site Engineer or Section Engineer on major infrastructure projects.
Strong experience delivering major structures, bridges, reinforced concrete, and heavy civils works.
Experience working on large-scale projects within highways, rail, utilities, energy, or similar sectors.
Strong setting out and surveying capability.
Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
Preferred Qualifications
SMSTS
CSCS Card
HNC/HND or Degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
Temporary Works experience (desirable)
First Aid qualification (desirable)
Ideal Candidate
We are looking for a self-sufficient freelance engineer with a strong track record on major construction projects, particularly structures and bridge packages. The successful candidate will be able to hit the ground running and contribute immediately to project delivery.
Rate: £480 - £500 per day (Inside IR35)
Duration: Initial 3-month contract with potential extension
