Location: Tamworth

Salary: £51,510.48 Per Annum

Department: Engineering

Shift: Shift-based working, 4 on 4 off

Reports to: Engineering Shift Manager

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced and proactive Shift Engineer to join our Engineering team within a fast-paced food manufacturing environment.

The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining and improving site equipment and services, ensuring maximum equipment availability and minimum production downtime. You will be responsible for carrying out both planned and corrective maintenance, responding quickly to breakdowns, supporting continuous improvement initiatives, and ensuring machinery is safe, reliable and ready for production.

This is a hands-on role requiring strong technical knowledge, excellent fault-finding ability and the confidence to work collaboratively with Engineering, Production and other site teams.

Key Responsibilities

Carry out planned preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance on plant, machinery and site services.

Diagnose faults efficiently and implement effective technical solutions to minimise production downtime.

Ensure all maintenance work is accurately recorded within the CMMS.

Complete shift handovers and ensure outstanding issues are clearly communicated to incoming teams.

Ensure machinery and services are fully operational and ready for production following maintenance activities.

Respond promptly to engineering requests and provide effective support to Production teams.

Ensure engineering downtime is accurately recorded and reported.

Ensure appropriate spare parts are available and identify upcoming requirements for planned servicing and maintenance.

Carry out relevant site checks, including areas such as boiler and effluent plant systems.

Maintain high standards of housekeeping within engineering areas.

Support other engineers and operational teams with first-line maintenance and technical guidance.

Ensure work is completed in accordance with health & safety procedures, permits and safe systems of work.

Identify engineering improvements and opportunities to improve equipment reliability, efficiency and cost effectiveness.

Support continuous improvement, lean manufacturing and engineering best-practice initiatives.

Participate in machine servicing inspections and maintenance reviews.

Support the development and training of other engineers where required.

Take ownership of an engineering improvement project and report progress to management.

Ensure all relevant training, procedures and food safety requirements remain up to date.

What We're Looking For

We are seeking an engineer with a strong technical background and a methodical approach to fault finding and problem solving.

Essential:

Strong engineering qualifications or equivalent practical experience, ideally gained through an apprenticeship and technical training to HND level or equivalent.

Significant experience working in a manufacturing environment.

Strong mechanical and/or electrical engineering knowledge.

Proven fault-finding and problem-solving ability.

Experience of planned and reactive maintenance.

Strong analytical and decision-making skills.

Good computer literacy and experience using maintenance or computerised systems

Ability to remain calm and effective within a fast-paced production environment.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Ability to prioritise competing tasks and respond effectively to production requirements.

Commitment to health & safety and continuous improvement.

Desirable:

Experience within FMCG or food manufacturing.

Experience with lean manufacturing and continuous improvement.

Experience of coaching or supporting other engineers.

Knowledge of HACCP and food manufacturing standards.

Experience working with CMMS or maintenance management systems.
