Senior Mechanical Engineer

Our client is a leading engineering and construction organisation delivering major capital projects across the UK water sector. They are currently seeking an experienced Mechanical Construction Engineer to support the delivery of mechanical installation works on clean water and wastewater treatment projects.

Working closely with Project Managers, Site Managers, Contractors and multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will be responsible for overseeing the planning, coordination and assurance of mechanical installation activities, ensuring works are delivered safely, compliantly and in accordance with project specifications and water industry standards.

Key Responsibilities

Review mechanical work packages with Project Managers and Contractors to ensure alignment with programme, quality and installation requirements.
Assess upcoming mechanical installation activities and raise technical queries where clarification or design input is required.
Develop a detailed understanding of project specifications, process requirements and mechanical design standards, ensuring all works are delivered accordingly.
Review and approve Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) for mechanical systems, ensuring compliance with client and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate and review mechanical drawings, P&IDs, equipment layouts, installation sequences and vendor documentation.
Monitor on-site mechanical installation activities, recording progress and verifying compliance with approved procedures and specifications.
Produce and maintain short and medium-term construction programmes for mechanical works, tracking progress against key milestones.
Monitor mechanical construction activities against approved Method Statements and project schedules, identifying and resolving any deviations.
Review and manage completion records, test documentation, commissioning packs and quality sign-off records.
Support the management of mechanical subcontractors and installation teams to ensure safe and efficient project delivery.
Interface with process, electrical, civil, commissioning and project controls teams to ensure seamless project execution.
Identify construction risks, constraints and opportunities, providing practical solutions to maintain programme delivery.
Support the installation, testing and commissioning of water and wastewater treatment equipment.

Requirements

Proven experience as a Mechanical Construction Engineer, Mechanical Site Engineer, Mechanical Project Engineer or similar.
Experience delivering mechanical installation works within the water, wastewater, utilities, process, chemical, energy or infrastructure sectors.
Strong understanding of mechanical systems including pumps, valves, pipework, screens, blowers, chemical dosing systems, filtration equipment and associated treatment plant.
Experience working on water treatment works (WTW), wastewater treatment works (WWTW), pumping stations, reservoirs or associated infrastructure projects.
Experience reviewing technical specifications, P&IDs, construction drawings, ITPs and mechanical quality documentation.
Knowledge of construction sequencing, installation methodologies, pressure testing, flushing, commissioning and handover requirements.
Familiarity with water industry standards and frameworks, including AMP programmes.
Ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders and contractors within a live operational environment.
Strong planning, reporting and progress monitoring capabilities.
CSCS card and SMSTS/SSSTS certification desirable.

Desirable

Experience working on projects for UK water utilities such as United Utilities, Severn Trent, Yorkshire Water, Thames Water, Anglian Water, Welsh Water or Southern Water.
HNC/HND or Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
Familiarity with NEC contracts and construction delivery within water industry frameworks.
Experience supporting commissioning and asset handover activities
