Description:

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Location: South Elmsall

Sector: Engineering / Automation / Power Transmission / Bespoke Machinery

Salary: £57,000 - £60,000

Type: Permanent

About the Role

A global engineering company is looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to serve as a technical authority across automation systems, power transmission equipment and custom-engineered solutions. This position suits an engineer capable of running several design phases at once, taking ownership of key project components, and helping shape the technical direction of the wider engineering team.

Although this isn't a direct line management role, it does involve assigning tasks, planning design work, supporting fellow engineers, and mentoring junior team members. The right candidate will show genuine leadership qualities and help foster a high-performing engineering environment.

Main Duties

Technical Innovation — Champion new methods, process improvements and better documentation across automation, power transmission and bespoke mechanical systems, acting as the go-to expert for challenging technical problems.

Project Ownership — Take charge of major project components or standalone projects, delivering to technical, schedule and budget requirements.

Advanced Problem Solving — Tackle complex engineering challenges by drawing on deep technical knowledge and hands-on mechanical design experience.

Bid & Proposal Support — Contribute expert technical input to bids, covering risk assessment, concept work, cost estimation and initial planning.

Design Lifecycle Delivery — Manage the design process end-to-end, from concept through to detailed design, covering modelling, calculations, design reviews, production drawings and BOM creation.

Engineering Calculations — Carry out and check calculations using manual methods, spreadsheets, FEA and specialist software.

Client & Site Interaction — Take part in client meetings, assist with site surveys, handle technical queries and support installation, testing and commissioning work.

Production Support — Assist production teams with technical questions, red-line updates, inspections and Factory Acceptance Testing.

Legacy Equipment Support — Offer engineering support for existing or previously supplied equipment and systems.

Team Mentoring — Guide and mentor colleagues, support their CPD, and help build a positive, collaborative engineering culture.

Quality & Safety — Make sure all work meets safety standards, quality requirements and best practice.

Stakeholder Engagement — Develop strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, contractors and internal teams, representing the company professionally at all times.

Leadership Contribution — Chair project meetings, present design concepts, and make sure colleagues feel valued and included in discussions.

What You'll Need

Engineering Degree — Bachelor's or Master's in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience).

CAD Skills — Strong 3D CAD ability (AutoCAD or Inventor preferred).

Automation & Mechanical Systems — Background in automated machinery, power transmission systems or bespoke mechanical equipment.

Professional Development — A commitment to CPD and involvement with industry bodies, seminars and technical events.

Solid grasp of advanced engineering principles, able to work with minimal supervision.

Strong communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.

The chance to own impactful engineering projects across automation and bespoke mechanical systems

Genuine influence over design standards and technical direction within a global organisation

A collaborative culture that values innovation and continuous improvement

Varied engineering challenges spanning multiple sectors
