We are now recruiting for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to be involved in delivering an industry leading, cutting-edge design project for a new type of nuclear power station.

What we’re looking for

As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for the design of the SMR containment structural components, as part of the Reactor Island Integration team. You will work within a core team responsible for the delivery of critical path components with significant number of system and component interfaces.

The role will involve developing and understanding technical and through-life requirements of systems, structures, and components (SSCs), performing optioneering studies to determine optimal design, manufacturing, and construction solutions in keeping with the SMR modular build philosophy.

As a senior member of the team, you will be expected to guide and mentor junior engineers to help them develop their full potential.

We would like you to have experience or expertise in several of the following areas, but we do not expect you to possess all of them:

Proficiency in Manufacturing Processes:
Can demonstrate manufacturing processes knowledge & experience of machining, and metal forming, but particularly flux cored arc welding & Submerged arc welding techniques is important. Coordinating the development of a series of weld specifications on carbon steel of thicknesses of 60mm. Deliverables will include proactive liaising with internal & external stakeholder in materials, welding, and NDE teams to produce welding schedules that include dis-similar materials, define welding verification and validation methodologies, compiling welding consumables, and leading localized design & development activities & associated cost-gathering governed through a Gated Review process.

Familiarity with ASME Design Codes:
Candidates with a strong understanding of ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) Design Codes will be well-suited to the position.
Knowledge of ASME III and ASME IX relative to pressure vessels is valuable.
Experience in the development of design solutions from initial concept through to detailed design definition, including experience of implementing trade-off/optioneering studies to ensure an optimum solution is produced.
Proficiency in designing for through-life operation, testing, inspection, repair, and replacement of large fabricated and mechanical assemblies.

Expertise in Pressure Vessels and Systems
Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams and supply chain partners for sub-contracted work packages, to achieve a single integrated solution that ensures the containment vessel (and supporting components) meets the needs of interfacing systems as well as other factors arising from environmental, safety, security, and Safeguarding (E3S), in line with Relevant Good Practice (RGP).
Experience in heavy manufacturing, shipbuilding are valuable assets, given the nature of our operations.

Experience in the Nuclear Industry
We are seeking candidates with ideally a background in the nuclear industry or a highly regulated industry.

Knowledge of Structural Integrity Methodology
An understanding of structural integrity methodology and assessment.
Knowledge of materials behaviour and through-life degradation.

Familiarity with UK Regulatory Expectations
Candidates with knowledge of UK regulatory expectations and safety case methodology, particularly within the nuclear industry, are encouraged to apply.

Qualification

Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
Chartered Engineer (or working towards Chartership).

Pay and Benefits

We anticipate paying a salary between £5,000 to £65,000

Bonus - Performance related bonus of up to 12.5%
Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package
Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.
Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.
Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover health care
Life Assurance - 6x pensionable pay
£250 - One-off payment for new starters for home office purchases
