Description:

Senior Mechanical Engineer

University of Nottingham | Nottingham, NG7 2TU |

Fixed-term Contract, 24 Months | £48,000 to £55,000

Your passion for mechanical engineering isn’t built on pre-destined routines and agendas; it’s from experimentation and innovation – you thrive on learning, testing, and discovering.

This is an adventure-based mechanical engineering and rotating machinery testing role. Step beyond industrial requirements and pre-set tasks and disciplines and embrace a remit for creative ideas and curiosity-driven exploration.

During a 24-month fixed-term contract, with excellent prospects for long-term employment, you’ll gain unparalleled exposure to ideas, subject-matter experts, and explorative research.

Because here’s the secret… Working for The University of Nottingham isn’t all about academic hacks and library stacks; it’s a versatile and progressive pathway for your engineering career.

The Key Requirements…

A degree in mechanical engineering – this is a must
Knowledge of rotating machinery and vibrations – from academia or experience
An understanding of signals in the frequency and time domains
Proficient IT skills for managing data and documents
This role will immerse you in experimental facilities. You’ll be conceiving and running test rigs, setting up control systems for spinning rigs, and interfacing with modellers to explore and resolve predictions and outcomes.

It’s the interesting stuff – when the results of experiments differ from the modelling! You’ll learn and investigate, evolving ideas and concepts with the ultimate aim of impressing stakeholders. If you’re a can-do character who loves to suggest ideas but has the resilience to appreciate the balance of the right idea versus the right time, you’ll fit right in.

The University of Nottingham is an established employer of more than 7,000 people. We strive to enable potential and make an impact, prioritising safety, sustainability, and opportunity. Joining an agile engineering faculty, you’ll benefit from an environment where decisions and opportunities can be acted on quickly. When this contract expires, you can be prioritised for redeployment and potential roles within the university or via our industry connections.

The Benefits…

30 days of annual leave plus eight bank holidays on top and up to five university closure days
Working at our modern, purpose-built 65-acre Jubilee Campus
Hybrid working – work from home one day per week
Flexible working around the core working hours of 10am to 3pm
Pension – the option to join the Universities Superannuation Scheme
Canteen and restaurant
Access to sports and fitness facilities – for all ability levels – at our £40m sports complex
University health and counselling services and discounted private medical insurance
