Description:

Senior Geotechnical Engineer

1.    Have you led geotechnical engineering activities on a nuclear, defence, or other highly regulated infrastructure project, including responsibility for foundation design, ground stability and geotechnical risk management?
2.    Do you have demonstrable experience assessing and mitigating complex geotechnical hazards such as liquefaction, settlement, soil-structure interaction, seismic loading, or ground improvement solutions for safety-critical structures?
Would you like to play a key role in shaping the geotechnical design basis for a first-of-a-kind UK infrastructure programme, influencing decisions that will impact the project from concept through to construction and operation?

The Opportunity
This is a rare opportunity for a highly experienced Geotechnical Engineer to join a pioneering, nationally significant infrastructure programme at a critical stage of development. As the project continues to evolve and expand its design capability, there is a requirement for a Lead Geotechnical Engineer to act as the technical authority for all ground engineering matters across a complex, safety-critical environment.
Working within an Intelligent Client / Design Authority organisation, you will be responsible for defining, integrating and assuring the geotechnical design basis for major civil and structural assets. You will provide technical leadership across multidisciplinary engineering teams, ensuring ground-related risks are identified, mitigated and managed whilst supporting regulatory approvals, safety case development and long-term infrastructure performance.
This position offers the opportunity to influence a first-of-a-kind programme, work alongside nationally recognised engineering specialists and contribute directly to the delivery of innovative infrastructure solutions in a highly regulated environment.
Key Requirements
•    Extensive geotechnical engineering experience within nuclear, defence, energy or similarly regulated sectors.
•    Strong expertise in soil mechanics, rock mechanics, geotechnical risk assessment and ground improvement techniques.
•    Experience supporting major infrastructure or safety-critical projects through design, assurance and regulatory review processes.
•    Knowledge of seismic design, extreme loading assessments and soil-structure interaction.
•    Experience operating within a Design Authority, Intelligent Client or technical assurance environment.
•    Ability to integrate geotechnical data and engineering decisions within BIM and digital twin environments.
Key Benefits
•    Opportunity to shape and influence a nationally significant infrastructure programme.
•    High-profile technical leadership position with significant autonomy.
•    Complex and intellectually challenging engineering environment.
•    Exposure to multidisciplinary engineering teams and senior stakeholders.
•    Long-term project pipeline and career development opportunities.
•    Flexible and collaborative working environment.

•    Define, maintain and assure the geotechnical design basis and engineering parameters across the programme.
•    Provide technical assurance of geotechnical deliverables produced by delivery partners and external consultants.
•    Assess and manage key ground-related risks including liquefaction, settlement, bearing capacity and slope stability.
•    Develop and oversee ground improvement strategies for heavily loaded and safety-significant structures.
•    Provide specialist input into seismic assessments, blast loading studies and soil-structure interaction modelling.
•    Support foundation, excavation, earthworks and infrastructure design activities.
•    Ensure geotechnical considerations are fully integrated across civil, structural, safety, construction and project teams.
•    Support the development of safety cases by providing robust geotechnical arguments, assumptions and evidence.
•    Contribute to regulatory submissions, environmental assessments and engineering justification documentation.
•    Integrate geotechnical data, models and assumptions within digital engineering and digital twin platforms.
•    Support design reviews, technical assurance activities, risk workshops and governance processes.
•    Identify opportunities to reduce technical uncertainty and improve design confidence throughout project development.
