About the Role

Teach Now is seeking a SEND Teaching Assistant for a dedicated 1:1 role supporting a Year 5 pupil at an inclusive primary school in Islington.

You will support a pupil with autism and additional communication needs, helping them access lessons, manage daily routines and participate confidently in classroom life. Using established communication approaches and individualised, multisensory strategies, you will make learning more accessible while encouraging independence.

You will work closely with the class teacher and SEND team, following agreed support plans, routines and boundaries. A detailed handover, training and ongoing guidance will help you understand the strategies already in place and provide consistent support from the outset.

This role would suit someone with experience supporting autistic children or pupils with communication needs who is patient, observant and committed to recognising progress in all its forms.

Key Responsibilities

Provide consistent 1:1 support to a Year 5 pupil throughout the school day.

Adapt activities and use agreed communication approaches to support access to learning.

Help the pupil manage routines and transitions with calm, consistent guidance.

Use individualised and multisensory strategies to encourage participation and independence.

Follow agreed support plans, strategies and classroom boundaries.

Share observations with the class teacher and SEND team to support ongoing planning.

Requirements

Experience supporting autistic children or pupils with additional communication needs.

Understanding of different communication approaches, including non-speaking communication.

Experience following individual support plans and agreed classroom strategies.

A patient, consistent approach and strong communication skills.

The right to work in the UK and satisfactory professional references.

An enhanced DBS check, or willingness to undergo one, and a strong commitment to safeguarding.

What the School Offers

A detailed handover to help you understand established support approaches.

Training and ongoing guidance from the class teacher and SEND team.

An inclusive environment that values different ways of communicating and learning.

Experience using individualised and multisensory approaches.

A meaningful 1:1 role focused on participation, communication and independence.
