SEN Teaching Assistant – SEMH

Location: Merton, South West London

Salary: £93–£100 per day

Contract: Full-time, long-term temporary

Start date: 28 September 2026 or ASAP

A nurturing primary school in Merton is seeking a resilient and compassionate SEN Teaching Assistant – SEMH to support pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs.

You will work individually and with small groups, helping pupils regulate their emotions, engage with learning and develop positive relationships. The school uses a consistent, relationship-based approach and provides clear strategies to help pupils feel secure and succeed.

Responsibilities

• Providing tailored learning and emotional support

• Helping pupils engage with lessons and structured activities

• Supporting emotional regulation using agreed strategies

• Reinforcing clear routines, boundaries and positive behaviour

• Responding calmly to challenging situations

• Helping pupils manage transitions and unstructured times

• Following individual support and behaviour plans

• Recording observations and sharing progress with relevant staff

• Working closely with teachers, the SENCO and pastoral team

Requirements

• Experience supporting children with SEMH or behavioural needs

• A calm, patient and emotionally resilient approach

• Strong communication and relationship-building skills

• The ability to manage challenging behaviour consistently

• An understanding that behaviour can communicate an unmet need

• Experience in education, care, youth work or mentoring

• Team Teach or similar training would be advantageous

• An enhanced DBS check, or willingness to complete one
