Position: SEN Teaching Assistant – Key Stage 1

Contract Type: Full-time Temporary

Start Date: 4 November 2026

Location: Islington, North London

Salary: £101.80–£110 per day

Salary is dependent on the candidates qualifications and experience.

Hours of work: Full-time; exact hours to be confirmed

About the Role:

For a child who finds the classroom overwhelming, the right support can open up a whole lesson. Bring your patience, creativity and SEN experience to a Key Stage 1 role where helping children participate is at the heart of your day.

Teach Now is recruiting a SEN Teaching Assistant for a primary school in Islington, starting after October half-term. Youll support pupils with high SEN needs, working with class teachers and the SEN team to make learning accessible and build communication, confidence and independence.

Your approach will change with each child: breaking an activity into manageable steps, using visual prompts or offering calm reassurance during a transition. Alongside individual and small-group work, youll help pupils engage with classroom activities and develop positive relationships with their peers.

This role suits someone who notices when a child needs a different approach and works collaboratively to provide consistent, personalised support.

Requirements:

Previous experience supporting children with high SEN needs.

Experience in a primary school, ideally Key Stage 1 or Early Years.

Understanding of communication, sensory and emotional regulation needs.

Confidence adapting activities and following individual support strategies.

A calm, caring and resilient approach.

Strong communication skills and availability from November 2026.

Experience supporting autistic children or pupils with complex communication needs would be particularly valuable.

Key Responsibilities:

Provide individual and small-group support under the direction of teaching staff.

Adapt learning activities and resources to improve access and engagement.

Use clear instructions, visual resources and agreed communication strategies.

Encourage communication, social interaction and independence.

Support emotional regulation and reassure pupils during routines and transitions.

Follow individual support plans and share observations about progress and wellbeing.

Encourage classroom participation and positive peer relationships.

Benefits – Our client can offer you:

Practical experience supporting pupils in Key Stage 1.

Close collaboration with class teachers and the SEN team.

Opportunities to develop your use of adapted activities and visual resources.

A role combining learning support, communication and emotional development.

The chance to see how your consistent encouragement helps children participate more independently.
