SEN Teaching Assistant

Specialist SEMH School - Burnley - Up to £600 per week - Full-Time - September Start

Could you be the consistent and positive adult that helps a young person rebuild their confidence in education?

Do you have the patience, resilience, and personality to support pupils with SEMH needs and challenging behaviour?

A specialist SEMH school in Burnley is looking for an SEN Teaching Assistant to join its experienced team. The school supports secondary-aged pupils who require additional structure, individualised support, and strong relationships to engage successfully with education.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants a genuinely hands-on role supporting young people with complex social, emotional, and behavioural needs.

The Role - SEN Teaching Assistant

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will work with pupils who may have SEMH, ADHD, Autism, attachment difficulties, trauma-related needs, and associated behavioural challenges.

Your role will extend far beyond simply providing academic support. You will help pupils navigate the school day, manage difficult emotions, develop positive relationships, and gradually become more confident and independent learners.

Some pupils may become dysregulated or display challenging behaviour. You will work alongside experienced teachers and pastoral professionals to understand individual triggers and implement appropriate behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.

What's on Offer

Up to £600 per week
Full-time, long-term SEN Teaching Assistant position
September start
Comprehensive SEMH and behaviour management training
Experience supporting pupils with complex needs
Support from experienced SEN and pastoral professionals
Excellent preparation for careers in Psychology, Youth Justice, Social Work, Mental Health, Counselling, or SEN EducationWho Are We Looking For?

Previous experience in an SEMH school, SEN provision, PRU, alternative provision, residential care, or behaviour support setting would be highly desirable.

Candidates with transferable experience from youth work, care, support work, sports coaching, or mentoring are also encouraged to apply.

The position could also provide outstanding experience for a Psychology graduate looking to develop their understanding of behaviour, emotional regulation, trauma, and additional needs before progressing towards postgraduate study or a clinical career.

Most importantly, you will need to be resilient, emotionally intelligent, patient, and confident establishing clear boundaries while continuing to approach pupils with empathy and respect.
