Position: Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant

Contract Type: Full-time, permanent

Start Date: 06/10/2026

Location: Havering, London, UK

Salary: £95–£101 per day

Salary depends on experience and qualifications. Higher rates apply to candidates with substantial relevant experience and/or training, such as a recognised Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant qualification (or equivalent).

Hours: 8:30am–3:30pm, Monday to Friday, term time only

About the Role

Help children feel included, confident and ready to learn as a Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant at a primary school in Havering. You will support pupils with SEN to access lessons, build friendships and develop independence throughout the school day.

Working closely with teachers, you will adapt activities, reinforce literacy and numeracy skills, and provide individual or small-group support. Your encouragement and clear routines will help children participate, while your observations will guide next steps and celebrate their progress.

Requirements

Experience supporting primary-aged children with SEN in education or care.

Understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to childrens welfare.

Willingness to complete an enhanced DBS check and other safer recruitment checks.

Right to work in the UK.

Clear spoken and written communication with children, families and colleagues.

Ability to support primary learning, including basic literacy and numeracy.

Key Responsibilities

Help children access classroom activities and participate in school life.

Adapt tasks under the teachers guidance to meet individual learning needs.

Provide individual and small-group support while encouraging independence.

Share observations with teachers to inform planning and monitor progress.

Promote positive behaviour through calm communication and consistent routines.

Follow safeguarding procedures and maintain appropriate records.
