Role: SEMH Teaching Assistant

TeacherActive is currently recruiting for a confident and resilient SEMH Teaching Assistant to work within a welcoming Primary School based in Sparkhill, Birmingham (B12).

The school is based within an underprivileged and diverse community and supports pupils from a range of backgrounds, including children who may experience additional barriers to their education.

We are looking for a Teaching Assistant who is passionate about making a positive impact and can confidently support pupils with SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs), challenging behaviour and additional SEND needs.

The Role

As an SEMH Teaching Assistant, you may be required to:

Provide 1:1 and small-group support to pupils with SEMH and SEND needs
Support children who may display challenging or dysregulated behaviour
Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils
Encourage positive behaviour, engagement and participation in learning
Use appropriate de-escalation and behaviour management strategies
Help pupils regulate their emotions and successfully re-engage with learning
Work closely with the Class Teacher, SENDCo and wider school team
Act as a positive and consistent role model for pupils
Support the school's safeguarding and behaviour policies

The Ideal Candidate

The successful SEMH Teaching Assistant will ideally:

Have previous experience supporting children or young people with SEMH, challenging behaviour or SEND
Have at least 6 months' experience working with children or young people, ideally within a UK school or education setting
Be confident managing challenging situations in a calm, professional and consistent manner
Have excellent relationship-building and communication skills
Be patient, resilient and able to establish clear boundaries
Be available to work 5 days per week, Monday – Friday
Be committed to supporting children from a range of backgrounds and circumstances
Experience within SEMH provisions, SEND schools, Alternative Provisions, PRUs, youth work, mentoring or behaviour support would also be highly beneficial.
