Electrical Subject Matter Expert – Data Centres
Remote | UK, Germany, Netherlands, Spain or Italy
We are working with a leading consultancy business that is seeking an experienced Electrical Subject Matter Expert to support the delivery of major data centre and mission-critical infrastructure projects across Europe.
As an Electrical Subject Matter Expert, you will provide senior technical leadership across site due diligence, detailed design, construction administration and commissioning phases. You will be responsible for reviewing, coordinating and providing expert technical input to ensure electrical infrastructure is designed and delivered in line with project requirements, operational objectives and industry standards.
The Role
The Electrical Subject Matter Expert will lead and coordinate the electrical engineering aspects of complex data centre projects, working closely with internal teams, engineering consultants, contractors, vendors and client stakeholders.
Key responsibilities include:
* Lead the design and technical coordination of LV and HV electrical systems.
* Provide Electrical Subject Matter Expert input across data centre design, construction and delivery.
* Oversee the design and implementation of UPS systems, standby generators, switchgear, transformers and power distribution systems.
* Develop and review critical power architectures, including N+1, 2N and 2N+1 redundancy and resilience strategies.
* Review and approve electrical drawings, specifications, calculations, equipment schedules and technical documentation.
* Provide technical assurance throughout site due diligence, detailed design and construction administration.
* Ensure electrical systems comply with applicable IEC, IEEE, BS and local electrical standards and regulations.
* Support electrical capacity planning, load forecasting and energy efficiency strategies.
* Coordinate electrical requirements with mechanical, telecommunications, controls, security and architectural disciplines.
* Provide Electrical Subject Matter Expert support during equipment selection, procurement and vendor engagement.
* Review contractor proposals, technical submissions, equipment data sheets and method statements.
* Support testing, commissioning and operational readiness activities, including Commissioning Levels 1–5.
* Identify technical risks and provide practical engineering solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
* Lead and direct electrical engineering consultants and contribute to the successful delivery of multiple concurrent projects.
Skills & Qualifications
The successful Electrical Subject Matter Expert will have significant experience delivering electrical infrastructure within data centre, mission-critical or similarly complex environments.
You will ideally have:
* Proven experience as an Electrical Subject Matter Expert, Lead Electrical Engineer or Senior Electrical Engineer within the data centre or mission-critical sector.
* A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a lead electrical engineering or SME position within data centres or mission-critical environments.
* Strong technical knowledge of critical power systems, electrical distribution and data centre resilience requirements.
* Extensive experience with HV/LV systems, UPS, generators, switchgear, transformers and protection systems.
* Strong understanding of data centre redundancy and resilience models, including N+1, 2N and 2N+1.
* Experience reviewing electrical designs, load calculations, specifications and technical documentation.
* Working knowledge of IEC, IEEE, BS and relevant European/local electrical standards.
* Experience supporting commissioning, testing and operational readiness of mission-critical electrical systems.
* A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
* Excellent communication, stakeholder management and presentation skills.
* Strong analytical, problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
* Proven ability to lead engineering teams, coordinate multidisciplinary stakeholders and manage complex, high-value projects.
* Experience working within an electrical engineering consultancy, design consultancy or similar technical environment.
