Freelance Quantity Surveyor – Bristol

£350/day | Outside IR35 | Minimum 3 months | Potential 18 months

A contractor delivering a flagship scheme in Bristol is looking to appoint a freelance Quantity Surveyor to provide hands-on commercial support to the project.

The initial requirement is for a minimum of three months, although there is substantial scope for this to become a much longer-term position. With approximately 18 months of works ahead, the contractor is open to expanding the role considerably for somebody who demonstrates their value and wants greater commercial responsibility.

The QS will work permanently on site in Bristol, with direct involvement with the business owner and project team. This is a practical, delivery-focused commercial role where you'll need to be comfortable getting into the detail rather than relying on sophisticated commercial systems.

Typical responsibilities will include:

Commercial support across earthworks, civils and out-of-ground works
Measuring and pricing works and variations
Reviewing items such as temporary works/scaffold towers and associated variations
Collating labour hours, plant and machine hours to establish accurate work records for invoicing
Basic pricing and cost exercises
Managing and responding proactively to commercial enquiries arising through project correspondence
Maintaining commercial records and reporting using Excel
Supporting accurate invoicing and substantiation of completed works
Identifying additional commercial opportunities and areas where tighter controls can improve project performance
The client is looking for somebody who already understands earthworks/civils commercially and can operate with a good degree of independence. You don't need to be reliant on specialist QS software—the business predominantly works through Excel.

For an ambitious QS, there is potentially a much bigger opportunity than the initial brief suggests. You'll be working closely with the business owner, and somebody who proves capable could take increasing ownership of the commercial function as the project develops.

Rate: £350 per day
IR35: Outside IR35
Location: Bristol – site based
Duration: Minimum 3 months, with realistic potential to extend towards 18 months.
