Description:

Job Title: Proposal Engineer, STATCOM / Power Quality

Salary: £45,000 to £65,000, depending on experience

Location: England (hybrid, on site one to three times a month)

You have worked on STATCOM schemes and you know why they are rated the way they are. Now you want a say in what gets built.

This is the step from delivering projects to shaping them. As a Proposal Engineer, you sit at the front end, where a customer's grid code requirement becomes a technical solution and a winning offer. Your judgement sets the rating, the design and the price before a single cable is laid.

About the company

A global engineering group in power conversion and medium and high voltage electrical infrastructure. Its Power Quality division is growing fast across the UK and Northern Europe, backed by serious R&D investment. It is a large corporation, but an open one, and very ambitious. The people who do well here want to move.

Why this role

You will be the only proposal engineer in the Power Quality team. Today, the design team handles bids alongside everything else. You would build the function, supporting the Sales Director on opportunities across the UK and Northern Europe, with a realistic route into leadership fairly soon. You will also see far more projects than any one delivery team ever does.

What you'll do

You will own customer enquiries from first request to finished technical proposal. That means analysing specifications and grid code compliance requirements, developing the solution and sizing the key equipment: STATCOM, coupling transformer, reactors, switchgear and circuit breakers. You will gather supplier quotations and build the offer. Projects run from several million pounds to major infrastructure programmes.

You will work alongside sales, engineering and global technical specialists, with close support from the European engineering team, especially early on.

What you'll bring

Essential: hands-on involvement in STATCOM or SVC work at medium or high voltage, and it needs to be personal. Perhaps you sized a scheme in MVAr against a grid code, contributed to a single line diagram, specified the main equipment, ran or interpreted the studies behind the rating, or commissioned a system. It does not need to be design from scratch. You will also have two to three years' engineering experience, a background in energy infrastructure, power generation or grid, and a real wish to work on tenders and bids.

A degree in electrical engineering is preferred. Equivalent experience is welcome.

To be clear about the limit: work confined to LV harmonic filters, LV SVG cabinets or BESS inverters in reactive mode will not meet the bar on its own. Neither will one-off support on someone else's project.

Nice to have: experience in applications, systems, studies or commissioning, or MV power electronics work on FACTS schemes.

You do not need commercial experience. Costing, supplier management and offer structure will all be taught.

Rewards & growth

Salary of £45,000 to £65,000, depending on experience. Hybrid working. Structured training from an international centre of excellence. From there, the route is open to senior technical, commercial or leadership roles.

Location, travel and right to work

The office is in the West Midlands and you will be on site one to three times a month, so you should live within roughly two to two and a half hours of it. Travel is light. There is none early in a bid, but once an opportunity is live and at the business end, expect some flights to Europe. You must have the right to work in the UK and be able to travel to Europe for work.
