Project Engineer

£50,000 - £55,000 per annum

Monday - Friday

Commutable from - Bedford, Cambridge, St Neots, Biggleswade, Huntingdon, Royston

Are you an experienced Project Engineer with a background in process engineering, bespoke machinery, or food processing systems?

Are you confident in managing engineering projects from order receipt right through to site installation, handling customer scoping, timing plans, P&IDs, and layout drawings using AutoCAD LT? If you're looking for a varied, end-to-end project role with strong earning potential within an established engineering team, this could be an excellent opportunity.

Our client is a market-leading manufacturer of specialized processing equipment and systems supplied into the food and convenience sector. Due to continued growth, they are looking to appoint a Project Engineer to join their dedicated project delivery function. Reporting into the Project Manager, you will take ownership of customer contracts, acting as the primary point of contact for clients while coordinating closely with internal design, production, purchasing, and commissioning teams.

This is predominantly an office-based role offering stability and structured day-shift hours, with only infrequent visits to UK customer sites when required for site surveys, FATs, or installation handovers.

The Role

Contract Ownership: Take full responsibility for engineering contracts from initial receipt of order through to successful site installation, commissioning, and client handover.
Client & Project Scoping: Act as the main technical and commercial point of contact for clients, agreeing project scope alongside sales teams and managing project change requests.
Planning & Scheduling: Develop, own, and maintain detailed project schedules and timing plans using MS Project (Gantt charts).
Project Documentation & CAD: Produce essential project documentation including Scopes of Supply, P&IDs, BOMs, and provisional 2D plant layout drawings using AutoCAD LT.
Procurement Support: Specify and source bought-out components, equipment, and sub-contract services required for project delivery.
Testing & Installation Coordination: Coordinate Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT/PDI), oversee packing/shipping logistics, prepare installation plans and RAMs, and manage Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
On-Site Supervision: Infrequently visit customer sites in the UK to oversee equipment delivery, manage sub-contractors on-site, and facilitate training and handover documentation.
Commercial Awareness: Ensure project milestones are tracked, costings are controlled, and invoices are triggered on time. The Candidate

Proven track record running end-to-end engineering projects within a process engineering, special purpose machinery, or industrial manufacturing environment (food processing industry experience highly preferred).
Hands-on proficiency with AutoCAD LT for creating and tweaking 2D layout drawings, P&IDs, and plant equipment plans.
Confident working with MS Office and MS Project to manage timelines and budgets.
Practical technical knowledge of process systems-exposure to steam systems, pipework, pneumatics, hydraulics, or basic electrical control systems is highly advantageous.
Strong communication skills with a track record of building positive relationships with customers, internal engineering teams, and sub-contractors.
Formal project management qualifications (e.g., PRINCE2, HNC/Degree) are welcomed, but strong practical project engineering experience is the main requirement.
