Production Engineer Overview:
Review customer drawings, specifications and BOMs before work reaches production

This Production Engineer role is with an established precision engineering manufacturer in Christchurch, supporting the business through the early stages of manufacturing. The Production Engineer will review drawings, specifications, BOMs and customer requirements, then make sure work is accurately costed, planned, documented and ready for production. This Production Engineer position suits someone with strong manufacturing knowledge who can understand technical requirements, identify risks and work closely with customers, suppliers and internal teams.
The Production Engineer role
As Production Engineer, you’ll sit between estimating, customer requirements, suppliers and production release. The role needs someone who can look at engineering drawings, understand how work should be manufactured, assess material and process needs, and turn that information into accurate estimates, routings and production information.
The Production Engineer will play a key part in making sure jobs are properly reviewed before they reach the shop floor, helping reduce avoidable issues around cost, quality, materials, delivery and manufacturability.
Day-to-day responsibilities of a Production Engineer
Prepare accurate cost estimates and quotations from customer drawings, specifications and BOMs
Review customer requirements and identify technical, commercial, quality and manufacturing considerations
Plan manufacturing processes, routings and material requirements before production release
Liaise with customers to clarify drawings, specifications, tolerances and delivery expectations
Work with suppliers to obtain pricing, lead times, material availability and technical information
Support contract reviews, project reviews, kick-off meetings and pre-production activity
Identify manufacturing risks, cost implications and technical issues early in the process
Maintain accurate records and production information within the MRP system
Work with internal departments to make sure jobs are clearly documented before release
Support continuous improvement across estimating, pre-production and manufacturing processes
Help the business meet cost, quality, delivery and customer satisfaction targets
Follow company procedures, quality standards and Health & Safety requirementsWhat they’re looking for - Production Engineer
Experience in production engineering, manufacturing engineering, estimating, planning or pre-production
Good understanding of engineering drawings, technical specifications and BOMs
Able to prepare or support cost estimates, quotations or manufacturing cost information
Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, production methods and material requirements
Good numerical and analytical skills with strong attention to detail
Confident communicating with customers, suppliers and internal departments
Organised, proactive and able to manage work through to agreed deadlines
Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office and ideally MRP system experience
Able to work independently while supporting wider project and production teams
Relevant engineering qualification or equivalent manufacturing experience
Desirable - Production Engineer
CNC machining, fabrication, welding or precision engineering manufacturing experience
Contract review or production release experience
Previous estimating, quoting or routing experience
MRP system experience
Continuous improvement exposure within a manufacturing environment
