Business: emap

Brand: New Civil Engineer

Base Location: Fleet Street/Hybrid ( 3 days from home, 2 days in the office)

Employment Type: Full time, Permanent

Salary: £35,000- £40,000 DOE

New Civil Engineer (NCE) is the leading provider of news, insight and events for the UK civil engineering profession and industry. We cover nationally important topics including large-scale infrastructure development, technological innovations and the big challenges across the industry.

Ground Engineering (GE) is an essential source of information on new and practical aspects of geotechnical engineering, engineering geology and geo-environmental engineering. Supported by the British Geotechnical Association, engineers worldwide rely on GE for its comprehensive information, analysis and expert opinion.

Our teams produce frequent news stories every day of the working week, as well as monthly print magazines focused on great projects and the shape of the industry. The NCE and GE brands are long established and have a loyal and highly engaged audience, as well as a large volume of online visitors and an extensive programme of events throughout the year.

As Production Editor you will play a vital role in maintaining the quality our output, working to ensure that everything we publish across digital and print outlets is readable, informative and accurate – and also grabs the reader’s attention.

Key responsibilities:

* Support NCE and GE’s core goal of delivering news and feature material of consistently high quality, meeting the information needs of our audience across print and social media platforms

* Speedy, accurate copy editing of articles, applying a consistent style and optimising the use of different page elements to convey information and draw attention.

* Production editing of monthly print magazines, overseeing all pages through from initial layout through proofing to final press

* Working with the editorial team and freelance designers to create high-impact print layouts and imaginative cover concepts

* Assisting NCE’s news team in the preparation of daily email newsletters

* Planning ahead to ensure NCE and GE always have sufficient production capacity, booking freelance subs and designers as required within budgets set by the editors.

Skills and experience:

* We are looking for a capable production professional who is keen to take charge of print and digital output.

* Ideally, you will have experience of subbing news and features for a fast-paced B2B publication

* The role includes sub-editing and fact-checking, so both a keen eye and sharp mind will be essential, as you will typically be the last person to touch a story before publication

* You will also require the confidence to question reporters and editors whenever copy is unclear

* Basic layout skills are valuable, as is an eye for effective picture selection

* An interest in the built environment or experience with a technical, financial or business publication would be useful

* Familiarity with using social media to support a subscriber publication would also be welcome

Core competencies:

* Subbing expertise including effective headline writing, accurate copy editing and picture editing

* Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign

* Familiar with preparing and sending final pages to press

* Experience with web CMS and social media platforms

* Some experience with web analytics applications (ideally Adobe Analytics)

* Basic Illustrator and Photoshop skills

Personal Attributes:

* Organised and able to plan, including managing workflows that involve other people

* Confident, self-motivated, and determined to produce work of high quality

* A team player who enjoys contributing to long-term shared goals

* Motivated to share insights and help the development of the brand

* Versatile, with a positive approach to new challenges and shifting demands
