Product Design Engineer

Hourly Rate: £25.48 - £28.66 (based on experience)

Job Summary: We are seeking a skilled Product Design Engineer to join our dynamic team. This product-focused role leverages engineering principles and design practices to create optimised design concepts and mechanical design specifications. You will consider factors such as application, cost, weight, performance, reliability, durability, manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability.

In this role, you will effectively communicate the capability of design concepts to meet cross-functional requirements, including the assessment of alternative and competitive design concepts. You will collaborate across various disciplines to develop corporate and customer requirements, especially those needed to resolve product issues.

Key Responsibilities:

Investigate Value Package Introduction (VPI) program team or field-based issues, understand causal mechanisms, recommend appropriate actions, and own problem resolution from a design perspective with guidance from experienced team members.
Apply and support the execution of processes such as Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Consideration Checklist, Design Review, and tools such as iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, ANSYS Workbench to enable high-quality component and subsystem-level design decision making and design refinement.
Obtain input and negotiate with cross-functional and cross-discipline technical experts and senior-level designers to communicate the component and subsystem design intent through thorough Design Review packages.
Support design decision-making in areas like concept selection, concept optimisation, and design specifications impacting customers targeted by PPT, VPI, or VPCR initiatives.
Own problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, subsystems, or services with greater technical complexity and ambiguity than entry-level engineers.
Provide independent execution of established work processes and systems while developing technology or product knowledge and engaging in system and process improvements.
Involve minimal direct management of people but may coordinate and direct work among technicians and/or temporary student employees.
Contribute effectively toward team goals, exhibit influence within a work group, and continue developing proficiency in competency areas critical to success in the role.Qualifications and Competencies:

Cross-Functional Design Integration: Translate value package requirements into virtual designs and communicate design capability through approved cross-functional design reviews.
Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems: Apply an in-depth understanding of mechanical systems to create innovative and sound design concepts that meet customer expectations throughout the product lifecycle.
Mechanical Design Specification: Create complete specifications that communicate the information required to manufacture and inspect a product per its design intent, considering relevant standards.
Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis: Create CAD models in accordance with standards for system-level design concepts and various system-level analyses.
Product Problem Solving: Solve product problems using a data-based process, determining assignable causes and implementing robust solutions to prevent re-occurrence.
System Requirements Engineering: Translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements, track the status of requirements, and assess the impact of changes on project scope, schedule, and resources.
Product Platform Planning and Architecting: Develop holistic product platforms with key architectural features, perform trade-off analysis, and communicate plans executed by product development teams.Core Skills:

Bachelor's degree in Engineering or other relevant technical disciplines is required.Required Skills:

Experience with CREO 6 or 7
Knowledge of plastic injection molding
Experience working with sheet metal
Self-motivation, time management, and proactive prioritising
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work individually and in a cross-functional teamNice to Have (but not mandatory):

Experience with CREO 10
Some assembly maintenance experience
