Principal Transport Planner (Active Travel)

Description:

Our client is seeking an experienced Principal Transport Planner (Active Travel) to lead the development and delivery of walking, cycling and sustainable transport initiatives within a London borough. This contract opportunity will involve shaping transport policy, securing external funding and delivering projects that support environmental, health, regeneration and climate objectives.
Working within the Transport Planning team, the successful professional will lead the active travel programme and provide expert advice to Members, senior officers, consultants, contractors and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the development and delivery of an active travel programme
Manage projects promoting walking, cycling, sustainable transport and healthy streets
Develop and implement transport strategies, policies and action plans
Secure and manage external funding, including Transport for London programmes and other grant opportunities
Oversee the planning, design and delivery of active travel and public realm schemes
Lead consultation and engagement with residents, businesses, community groups, elected Members and partner organisations
Manage consultants, contractors and external partners involved in project delivery
Monitor programme performance, budgets and project outcomes
Analyse transport data to identify priorities and evaluate project effectiveness
Prepare reports, briefing notes, funding submissions and presentations for senior management and elected Members
Represent the organisation at regional forums, working groups and partnership meetings
Provide professional advice on active travel, sustainable transport and healthy streets

Job Requirements:

Significant experience in transport planning, active travel, highways, sustainable transport or a related discipline
Strong knowledge of active travel policy and transport planning principles
Experience developing and delivering walking and cycling infrastructure schemes
Experience managing complex transport projects, budgets and funding programmes
Understanding of current transport planning guidance and best practice
Experience working with local authorities, consultants, contractors and other stakeholders
Strong analytical, report-writing and presentation skills
Excellent communication, stakeholder management and relationship-building abilities
Ability to translate strategic objectives into deliverable schemes and measurable outcomes
Degree or equivalent qualification in Transport Planning, Civil Engineering, Geography, Urban Planning or a related discipline

Desirable Skills:

Membership of a relevant professional institution such as CIHT, TPS, ICE or equivalent
Experience working within a London local authority environment
Knowledge of Local Implementation Plans, Healthy Streets, Vision Zero and active travel funding programmes
Experience managing behaviour change and sustainable travel initiatives
