Principal Mechanical Design Engineer – Electric Motors
Farnborough, UK

Up to £80,000 + bonus

If you are a highly technical mechanical design engineer with high volume automotive experience looking to take on a leadership role and drive innovative projects from concept to production, we would love to hear from you.

We are seeking a highly technical Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a team of highly skilled engineers; leading mechanical technical decisions, issue resolution and major projects with a high level of autonomy.

This is a second-in-command position, responsible for managing and mentoring a group of experienced engineers.

Key Responsibilities: Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

* Lead technical decisions and resolve engineering issues on complex motor projects both next generation and existing

* Drive projects from concept through to productionisation, including sample design, prototyping and validation

* Champion technical excellence within the team, mentoring senior and junior engineers

* Oversee and carry out FEA, CFD and hand calculations on motor components and systems

* Implement cost reduction and design simplification strategies

* Manage supplier and high-volume manufacturing challenges - high pressure/low pressure die casting, injection moulding and stamping etc

* Contribute as a technical authority to high voltage, high power design applications

Key Requirements: Principal Mechanical Design Engineer

* A degree in mechanical engineering, automotive engineering or similar coupled with strong practical skills

* Proven high volume automotive experience (non-negotiable), ideally with a tier one or OEM

* Proven experience as a Principal / Lead mechanical design engineer working on dynamic, high voltage electromechanical systems from concept to production (3D, 2D, DFM, GD&T, BOMs etc)

* Ability to lead technical projects and teams of mechanical design engineers from product concept through NPI and into production

* Strong experience in the design of Motors, Transmissions, Gear systems, Bearings, Engines, Pumps, powertrain, drivetrain or other dynamic or rotating equipment is required

* Good understanding of metallic materials and manufacturing processes – HP/LP die casting, machining, pressing etc

* Use of high-end mechanical design systems (SolidWorks, Creo, Catia etc)

* Candidates should be good problem solvers, creative, self-motivated, methodical, focused and with a flexible attitude
