Grade: Band 5

Trust: Alder Hey Childrens NHS Foundation Trust

Location: East Prescot Road, Liverpool L14 5AB

Hours: Mon – Fri 37.5 hours

Pay rate: £15.67-£25.07 (uplifts for nights/weekends/Bank Hols)

End Date: Ongoing

Alder Hey Childrens NHS Foundation Trust are currently seeking organised and motivated candidates to fulfil Band 5 Orthopaedic Technician opportunities within the team at Alder Hey Childrens Hospital under a long-term placement contract. Post holder will work as part of a highly skilled and specialised team providing a comprehensive plaster service to children and their families. This will include treating patients with fractures and orthopaedic conditions as part of the multi-disciplinary team.

Post holder will be fully conversant with:

* Casting for all types of fractures

* Positioning and moulding of casts for fractures

* Casting for CTEV (Ponseti). Training will be given.

* Serial casting for idiopathic toe walking, Perthes Disease and spinal deformities

* Casting for children with DDH (hip spicas)

* Wedging of cast

* Removal of K Wires

* Aseptic dressing technique

* Have knowledge and be able to instruct in the use of walking aids

* Negative casting

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

* In depth knowledge of human anatomy and physiology relevant to Orthopaedics.

* Liaise with other health care professionals to facilitate the best treatment for patients and carers.

* Be able to explain likely outcome of procedures to children and their families

* Assess, plan and implement treatments for a wide range of orthopaedic problems without direct supervision

* Provide patients with appropriate exercises and advice on post rehabilitation treatment.

* Willingness to expand role and skills to meet the needs of children and families attending the plaster room.

* Attend theatre, X-ray and wards as necessary.

* Aware of professional responsibilities in the management and treatment of patients.

The Successful Candidate Will:

* Have one of the following BOA/RCN (SON) AOT Diploma in casting techniques/British Casting Certificate.

* Have willingness to expand role & skills to meet the needs of children and families attending the plaster room.

* Demonstrate a commitment to continuous professional development

* Knowledge of human anatomy & physiology relevant to orthopaedics

* Experience working with children is desirable
