Medical Engineer

The purpose of this job is to provide an efficient service for the day-to-day maintenance, repair, testing and commissioning of medical and surgical equipment used within all departments

Location: Hereford

Job Type: Temporary

Duration of booking: Expected to be 3 months

Proposed start date: ASAP

Pay Rates: Up to £17 per hour PAYE inclusive of holiday pay or £19 Per hour Umbrella pay

Hours / Working Days: Monday – Friday – 37.5 hours

Essential Key Skills:

Has mechanical/electronic/electrical knowledge.

B Eng Electronics degree or equivalent plus postgraduate study, specialist training, and experience to masters level.

Specialist training on medical devices

Experience of working in an Acute Hospital environment

Duties will include but not limited to the following:

To be professionally and technically competent to work autonomously in the role of Specialist Medical Engineer and to be able to work as part of the Medical Engineering team.

To calibrate and maintain medical equipment and devices for use in patient care.

To analyse and diagnose faults in complex, multi-faceted, delicate medical equipment, which may be in use on distressed patients, and then to carry out repairs.

To support the Trust in ensuring that service is provided to agreed standards and meets with current legislation and policies.

To make financial based and risk based decisions about the viability of equipment, and to have the authority to withdraw equipment from service.

To requisition repairs and parts (including stock control) and to check deliveries and repairs against orders.

To acceptance test new, trial and loan medical equipment.

To process official DoH safety, action and hazard notices, and where necessary carry out adaptation and/or modification of medical equipment.

To reduce the risks involved in using medical equipment, in line with current Health and Safety and other relevant policies.

To plan own workload, including the prioritising of repair requests.

To be responsible for medical equipment maintenance records and for the investigation of incidents involving medical equipment.

To comply with and actively take part in the development of the departmental procedures and quality systems.

To be a lead practitioner for specialist equipment and to organise servicing for specialist areas, including liaising with users and suppliers, arranging trials and commissioning of new equipment.

To undertake training as appropriate to enable the post holder to meet the requirements of the job description and/or in relation to personal development, subject to consultation with the engineer’s Line Manager.

To undertake regular specialist equipment training, including refresher training, to maintain expertise and develop depth of knowledge.

To provide specialist advice to managers and other staff in respect of development of medical equipment against the requirement of the role.

To arrange equipment trials of medical equipment; to liaise with suppliers, managers and clinical staff and make recommendations on both the purchase of and training in the use of equipment.

To actively participate in working parties, audits, committees and meetings.

To regularly provide practical training in the use of medical equipment and to be able to effectively communicate technical equipment-related information to clinical staff of all levels.

To make changes to operating manuals and propose changes to procedures for specialist areas, which may impact on other professions’ policies and practices, through sitting on working parties or evaluation of medical equipment with users before purchase.

To arrange medical equipment trials, standardisation, purchases, training, use and maintenance regimes through negotiation with suppliers and liaison with staff.

To provide regular and ad-hoc reports in a clear, concise manner, including research on equipment.

To ensure that the activities of the Medical Engineering Dept fit the accommodation, financial and staffing resources available.

To carry out any other duties commensurate with this job title and with the grade and responsibilities of this post.

To deputise in the absence of the Senior Medical Engineer.
