Mechanical Maintenance Engineer – BarnsleyWe are currently recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join a busy manufacturing site in Barnsley. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled Maintenance Engineer / Mechanical Maintenance Engineer looking to develop their career within a fast-paced manufacturing and production environment.

Working as part of a dedicated maintenance team, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing and fault-finding on a wide range of production machinery and plant equipment. You will play a key role in reducing downtime, improving equipment reliability and ensuring production continues to operate safely and efficiently.

This is a hands-on mechanical maintenance role suited to someone who enjoys diagnosing faults, solving technical problems and keeping production machinery running reliably.

Key Responsibilities
Carry out mechanical maintenance and repairs on production machinery, plant and equipment

Complete planned preventative maintenance (PPM) to minimise breakdowns and production downtime

Diagnose and resolve machine breakdowns quickly and effectively

Fault find on mechanical systems, including gearboxes and associated machinery

Work with and understand pneumatic and hydraulic systems and circuits

Liaise effectively with on-site contractors and remote service engineers

Use a CMMS maintenance system to accurately record maintenance activities, breakdowns and completed work

Monitor and maintain appropriate levels of critical engineering spare parts

Support continuous improvement and equipment reliability initiatives

Provide guidance and mentor apprentices within the maintenance team

Work independently and use initiative when responding to breakdowns and technical issues

Support the wider engineering team with overtime when required

RequirementsTo be considered for this Mechanical Maintenance Engineer position, you will need:

A relevant NVQ Level 3 / City & Guilds Level 3 qualification or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Maintenance, Engineering or a related discipline

A minimum of 4 years' industrial maintenance experience

Previous experience as a Maintenance Engineer, Mechanical Maintenance Engineer, Mechanical Engineer or Engineering Technician

Experience working within a manufacturing, production or industrial engineering environment

Strong mechanical maintenance and fault-finding skills

Experience working with gearboxes, machinery and mechanical systems

Good understanding of pneumatics and hydraulics

Experience carrying out PPM and reactive maintenance

Experience using CMMS / computerised maintenance management systems

Ability to diagnose breakdowns efficiently and minimise production downtime

Good communication skills and the ability to work with contractors and external engineers

Ability to work independently, prioritise workloads and use your own initiative

Flexibility to work overtime when required to support production

Shift PatternThe role operates on a 4-shift rota:

Shift 1: 6:00am – 2:00pm, Monday to Friday

Shift 2: 2:00pm – 10:00pm, Monday to Friday

Shift 3: 10:00pm – 6:00am, Monday to Friday

Shift 4: 6:00am – 4:00pm, Thursday to Sunday
