Description:

Mechanical Design Engineer

UK | £48,000–£51,000 | Permanent | Engineering / Automation / Power Transmission

A global engineering organisation is looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to take the lead on complex design work across automation systems, power transmission equipment and bespoke engineered solutions.

This is a senior, hands-on design role that goes beyond the drawing board. You'll manage multiple design phases simultaneously, contribute to technical direction and play an active part in mentoring and guiding colleagues through challenging projects. There's no direct line management responsibility, but strong technical leadership and a collaborative mindset are central to how this role operates.

The Role

• Technical Innovation — Developing new techniques, processes and documentation across automation, power transmission and bespoke mechanical systems, with an eye on emerging technologies and global industry trends

• Project Ownership — Leading major project elements or standalone projects, delivering against technical, schedule and budget requirements

• Complex Problem Solving — Resolving advanced engineering challenges drawing on real-world experience with automated machinery, mechanical systems and custom-built solutions

• Bid & Proposal Support — Contributing technical input, risk assessments, concept development and cost estimation to support bids and early-stage planning

• Design Delivery — Taking designs from concept through to detailed delivery, including modelling, calculations, design reviews, production drawings and BOM creation

• Engineering Calculations — Performing and reviewing calculations using hand methods, spreadsheets, FEA and specialist software

• Client & Site Interaction — Attending client meetings, supporting site surveys, responding to technical queries and contributing to installation, testing and commissioning activities

• Production Support — Assisting production teams with technical queries, red-line updates, inspections and Factory Acceptance Testing

• Legacy Equipment Support — Providing engineering support for existing and previously delivered automation or mechanical systems

• Team Mentoring — Mentoring colleagues, supporting professional development and contributing to a positive, collaborative team culture

• Quality & Safety — Ensuring compliance with safety standards, quality processes and engineering best practice

• Stakeholder Engagement — Building strong relationships with clients, suppliers, contractors and internal teams, representing the organisation professionally at all times

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience

• Strong 3D CAD capability — AutoCAD or Inventor beneficial

• Experience with automated machinery, power transmission systems or bespoke mechanical equipment

• Commitment to CPD and engagement with industry bodies, seminars and technical events

• Strong grasp of advanced engineering principles with the confidence to work independently and make sound decisions

• Excellent communication, organisation and problem-solving skills

What's on Offer

• £48,000–£51,000 salary

• Ownership of meaningful engineering projects across automation and bespoke mechanical systems

• The opportunity to shape design standards and influence technical direction within a global organisation

• A collaborative environment that genuinely values innovation and continuous improvement

• Exposure to varied engineering challenges across multiple sectors

This is a permanent opportunity for a technically strong engineer who wants more than just execution — someone ready to lead, shape and elevate the work around them.
