Role Overview

A global engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to lead complex design activities across automation systems, power transmission equipment, and bespoke engineered solutions. This role suits a highly capable engineer who can manage multiple design phases simultaneously, contribute to technical leadership, and support the development of high‑performing engineering teams.

Although the position has no direct line management, it requires strong leadership behaviours, mentoring capability, and the ability to guide colleagues through technical challenges and project delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Innovation — Develop new techniques, processes and documentation across automation, power transmission and bespoke mechanical systems. Maintain awareness of cutting‑edge technologies and global industry trends.

Project Ownership — Lead major project elements or small standalone projects, ensuring delivery against technical, schedule and budget constraints.

Complex Problem Solving — Resolve advanced engineering challenges using real‑world experience in automated machinery, mechanical systems and custom‑built solutions.

Bid & Proposal Support — Support bids with technical input, risk assessments, concept development, cost estimation and early‑stage planning for automation and power transmission projects.

Design Delivery — Deliver full lifecycle design from concept to detailed design, including modelling, calculations, design reviews, production drawings and BOM creation.

Engineering Calculations — Perform and review calculations using hand methods, spreadsheets, FEA and specialist software.

Client & Site Interaction — Attend client meetings, support site surveys, respond to technical queries and contribute to installation, testing and commissioning activities.

Production Support — Assist production teams with technical queries, red‑line updates, inspections and Factory Acceptance Testing.

Legacy Equipment Support — Provide engineering support for existing or previously delivered automation or mechanical systems.

Team Mentoring — Mentor colleagues, support professional development and contribute to a positive, collaborative team culture.

Quality & Safety — Ensure compliance with safety standards, quality processes and engineering best practice.

Stakeholder Engagement — Build strong relationships with clients, suppliers, contractors and internal teams, representing the organisation professionally at all times.

Requirements

Engineering Degree — Bachelor’s or Master’s in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience).

CAD Proficiency — Strong 3D CAD capability (AutoCAD or Inventor beneficial).

Automation & Mechanical Systems — Experience working with automated machinery, power transmission systems or bespoke mechanical equipment.

Professional Development — Commitment to CPD and engagement with industry bodies, seminars and technical events.

Strong understanding of advanced engineering principles, with the ability to work independently and make informed decisions.

Excellent communication, organisation and problem‑solving skills.
