A growing construction consultancy is looking to appoint a Mechanical Engineer to join its expanding M&E team. The consultancy works predominantly across the education and healthcare sectors, delivering a varied range of new-build, refurbishment and upgrade projects.

The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, providing mechanical engineering expertise across projects from initial feasibility through to completion. The role offers exposure to surveys, design, technical documentation, client and contractor meetings, as well as construction-stage activities.

Mechanical Engineer Salary & Benefits:

£35,000 - £50,000 salary, depending on experience

37.5-hour working week

Mechanical Engineer Job Overview:

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for undertaking mechanical building-services surveys, developing designs and specifications, and providing technical advice and support throughout the project lifecycle.

You will work across a range of systems including heating, ventilation, cooling, domestic water, above-ground drainage, heat pumps, plant and building-management systems. The role will cover refurbishment, extension and new-build projects, with involvement through design, procurement and construction.

The role will include:

Undertaking mechanical condition, asset, measured and feasibility surveys

Inspecting plant rooms, roof areas, service cupboards, risers and other building-services areas

Assessing existing mechanical systems, plant and equipment

Identifying defects, safety concerns, access restrictions and requirements for further investigation

Preparing survey reports, asset schedules, condition assessments and feasibility studies

Developing mechanical building-services designs from feasibility through to technical design

Designing heating, ventilation, cooling, domestic water, drainage, heat-pump and control systems

Undertaking engineering calculations including heat-loss, heat-gain, ventilation, pipe and duct sizing and pressure-loss calculations

Selecting plant and equipment and preparing schedules, schematics, layouts and specifications

Coordinating mechanical designs with architectural, electrical, structural, civil and other disciplines

Preparing and amending 2D CAD drawings where required

Attending client, contractor, design-team and site meetings

Responding to tender queries and contributing to value-engineering exercises

Reviewing contractor proposals, drawings, calculations and technical submissions

Undertaking construction-stage inspections and identifying defects or incomplete works

Supporting commissioning, snagging, practical completion, handover and aftercare

Supporting project management, contract administration or Employer's Agent activities where appropriate

Managing allocated work against agreed programmes, deliverables and fee budgets

Building professional relationships with clients, contractors, consultants and other stakeholders

Providing practical guidance to less experienced engineers and other team members

Mechanical Engineer Job Requirements:

Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline

Relevant experience in mechanical building-services surveying, design or project delivery

Practical knowledge of heating, ventilation, cooling, domestic water, drainage, heat-pump and control systems

Experience undertaking engineering calculations

Experience producing or coordinating specifications, schedules, drawings, reports and technical information

Working knowledge of AutoCAD and 2D technical drawings

Understanding of the RIBA Plan of Work, design coordination, procurement and construction-stage requirements

Working knowledge of UK legislation, Building Regulations and relevant industry standards

Experience inspecting installations and evaluating technical information

Good communication and organisational skills

Ability to manage multiple live projects and work independently

Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle for business use

Willingness to travel regularly and undertake site-based work

Experience within education, healthcare or other public-sector estates would be advantageous, as would experience with low-carbon heating, heat pumps, decarbonisation projects, Revit or BIM.

Membership of, or progress towards membership of, CIBSE, IMechE or another relevant professional institution would also be advantageous.

The successful candidate will ideally be working towards, or interested in working towards, Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.
