Location: Cardiff

Salary: Competitive, depending on level of experience

Industry: Metals / Recycling

Reference: ASPLIV

Our client, a leading UK steel manufacturing and recycling business, is looking to appoint an experienced Maintenance Manager to oversee maintenance operations at its recycling facility in Cardiff.

The site operates a modern, high-value industrial shredder, representing a £25 million investment, and is looking to strengthen its engineering function with someone who can take ownership of maintenance activities, improve preventative maintenance routines, and maximise plant reliability.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced maintenance professional with a background in scrap metal recycling, heavy industrial processing, or similar mechanical environments. Shredder experience would be highly advantageous, although candidates from other heavy process industries with strong technical knowledge and proven team management experience will also be considered.

The successful candidate will lead a team of mechanical and electrical engineers, ensuring maintenance activities are effectively planned, scheduled, and delivered to minimise downtime and maintain operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Take ownership of maintenance operations across the site's industrial shredding facility.
Develop, implement, and maintain effective preventative maintenance schedules.
Plan and coordinate maintenance activities to minimise disruption and maximise equipment uptime.
Lead and manage a team of mechanical and electrical engineers and fitters.
Oversee reactive maintenance, breakdowns, fault finding, and repair activities.
Identify recurring equipment failures and implement improvements to plant reliability.
Ensure maintenance tasks are prioritised, scheduled, and completed effectively.
Work closely with operational teams to coordinate maintenance requirements around production schedules.
Maintain high standards of engineering practice, health and safety, and equipment compliance.
Monitor maintenance performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce downtime.
Ensure appropriate maintenance procedures, routines, and records are in place.
Key Skills & Experience

Previous experience in a Maintenance Manager, Maintenance Supervisor, Engineering Manager, or similar senior maintenance role.
Strong mechanical or electrical engineering background, with a preference for mechanically biased candidates.
Experience managing a team of engineers, fitters, or maintenance technicians.
Strong understanding of preventative maintenance, maintenance planning, and scheduling.
Experience maintaining heavy industrial machinery or continuous process equipment.
Shredder experience within scrap metal recycling or waste processing would be highly advantageous.
Ability to diagnose complex mechanical issues and understand equipment failure in detail.
Experience managing reactive maintenance and improving planned maintenance performance.
Strong organisational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads effectively.
A proactive approach to improving maintenance standards, plant reliability, and operational performance.
Flexible approach to supporting a busy industrial operation and its maintenance requirements.
