With planning approval and Government financing support, SZC is now under construction and seeking private investment. Once completed, it will supply dependable electricity to 6 million homes for 60 years, aiding Britain in achieving Net Zero by 2050.

Job Purpose / Overview

The Design Authority within SZC is the intelligent customer for the safety case, providing technical oversight throughout licensing, procurement, manufacture, construction, commissioning, and operation. It owns and controls the safety case during the design and construction phase and is responsible for maintaining design integrity.

As an Internal Hazards Engineer, you will advise SZC project teams and the Responsible Designer on the adequacy of safety case deliverables. You will develop effective working relationships with stakeholders including EDF Energy, the Responsible Designer, external regulators (e.g., ONR and EA), and suppliers.

Principal Accountabilities

Understand the safety case elements related to internal hazards.
Act as the Internal Hazards topic lead on all aspects of the internal hazards topic, following a period of development and transition.
Identify, specify, produce, or review design basis internal hazards assessments.
Develop or review strategies and methodologies for managing and assessing risks from internal hazards, including those specific to SZC (e.g., Turbine Disintegration, changes to risks due to plot plan changes, etc).
Explain the general provisions for protection from hazards to others.
Manage the production and development of the site-specific safety case sections.
Support system groups in the EDF Nuclear Services Organisation and the SZC project in developing changes to the safety case.
Work effectively and maintain strong relationships with all engineering and regulatory bodies.
Coordinate support from other external organizations.

Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

Qualifications and Experience:

Degree or equivalent in physical science, maths, or engineering.
Chartered Engineer status is desirable.

Technical and Commercial Knowledge and Skills:

Demonstrable evidence of complex safety case management/production within the nuclear industry, with an emphasis on hazards safety cases.
Experience in identifying and resolving issues and development work within the lifecycle of nuclear plant construction through to operational level.
Excellent organizational skills.
Ability to operate autonomously or as part of a team.
Understanding the needs of quality.
Decision-making capability for the resolution of safety case issues.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with internal and external customers and suppliers.
