Role Summary

You will play a key role in preventing and relieving homelessness, providing comprehensive housing advice and managing a varied and demanding caseload. You will undertake housing needs assessments, develop personalised housing plans and explore a full range of housing options to help customers secure or retain suitable accommodation.

The role will require you to apply the Homelessness Reduction Act, Part VII of the Housing Act 1996, associated Code of Guidance and relevant case law when assessing applications and determining the appropriate course of action.

What You Will Do as a Housing Advisor

·Undertake housing needs assessments for customers seeking housing assistance and develop personalised housing plans based on their individual needs and circumstances.
·Manage a complex caseload of households who are homeless or threatened with homelessness, taking appropriate action to prevent or relieve homelessness through advice, advocacy, negotiation and mediation.
·Carry out homelessness assessments and investigations under Part VII of the Housing Act 1996, gathering and verifying relevant information and recommending appropriate decisions.
·Provide comprehensive housing advice through face-to-face appointments, drop-in services and telephone enquiries, dealing confidently with customers who may have complex needs or challenging circumstances.
·Explore the full range of housing options available, including private rented accommodation, supported housing and other alternatives to temporary accommodation.
·Work with customers, families, landlords and other agencies to prevent the loss of existing accommodation, including mediation and negotiation where households have been asked to leave.
·Assess temporary accommodation requirements where necessary and follow established placement and sign-up procedures to provide customers with a seamless service.

What You Will Need as a Housing Advisor

·Previous experience working within Housing Options, Housing Needs or Homelessness services, ideally within a local authority environment.
·Strong working knowledge of the Homelessness Reduction Act, Part VII of the Housing Act 1996, homelessness legislation, relevant Code of Guidance and associated case law.
·Experience undertaking homelessness assessments, developing personalised housing plans and managing complex housing casework.
·Strong knowledge of housing options, including homelessness prevention, private rented housing, temporary accommodation and supported housing.
·Excellent negotiation, mediation and advocacy skills, with the confidence to work with landlords, families, partner agencies and customers with complex or challenging circumstances.
