Highways Engineer

Salary: 37,500 - £43,000 per annum

General Overview:

Our client is seeking a motivated and experienced Highways Engineer to join their dynamic team and contribute to the development and maintenance of our county's road network. This position will take a lead role in the development of policies and programmes of work for highway maintenance, contributing to delivery of the Council's Highway Asset Management Policy and Strategy, and fulfilment of the Council's responsibilities for maintenance of the highway network, aligned to delivery of local and national objectives, to ensure that the highway network is protected as an asset for future generations.

Key Responsibilities:

Design and develop highway infrastructure projects including roads, bridges, and drainage systems.
Conduct site inspections and surveys to gather necessary data for project planning and design.
Prepare detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
Coordinate with local authorities, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure compliance with project requirements and regulations.
Monitor and manage project progress, resolving any issues that arise to ensure timely completion.
Ensure all work adheres to health, safety, and environmental regulations.
Provide technical support and guidance to junior engineers and other team members.

Essential Qualifications:

Qualified to HND / HNC (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or relevant associated discipline
Have least five years relevant experience in Highway Maintenance / Civil Engineering or relevant associated discipline
Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulatory framework for the provision of highway services.
Knowledge and experience of highway construction methods, maintenance treatments, materials, and equipment.
Knowledge of highway asset management systems
Management or supervisory experience
Understanding of Health and Safety legislation and good practice relating to highways and construction.
Budget and project management skills which are essential to ensure the effective delivery of the service with limited resources
The ability to plan, prioritise and organise work and to resolve problems which is essential in dealing with the often-conflicting demands of statutory bodies and services and user groups
Excellent communication skills
Flexible to meet the needs of the service including participation as Duty Officer (after training) in the on-call winter duty rota.
Experience in making decisions which may involve difficult choices or considered risks. They should be able to make decisions based on relevant information
