Description:

Job Purpose

To support teaching and learning across the school by working collaboratively with teachers to plan, deliver, and assess learning activities. The HLTA will lead whole-class sessions when required, provide targeted interventions, and contribute to raising standards of achievement for all pupils.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning Support

Plan, prepare, and deliver learning activities for individuals, small groups, and whole classes under the direction of a teacher.
Take responsibility for whole-class teaching during short-term teacher absence or PPA cover.
Monitor, assess, record, and report on pupil progress, providing feedback to teachers.
Adapt learning materials and strategies to meet the needs of pupils, including those with SEND, EAL, or additional needs.
Promote independent learning and positive behaviour in line with school policies.
Curriculum Support

Contribute to lesson planning and curriculum development.
Deliver targeted intervention programmes to support pupil attainment and progress.
Support the use of ICT in learning activities where appropriate.
Pastoral and Behaviour Support

Foster a safe, inclusive, and engaging learning environment.
Support pupils’ social, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
Implement behaviour management strategies consistently.
Team Collaboration

Work closely with teaching staff, SENCO, and other professionals.
Contribute to staff meetings, training, and professional development.
Support and mentor Teaching Assistants where appropriate.
Administrative Duties

Prepare classroom resources and maintain learning environments.
Assist with record-keeping, assessments, and reports.
Support school trips, events, and extracurricular activities.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

HLTA status or equivalent qualification/experience.
GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above.
Proven experience supporting teaching and learning in a school setting.
Strong understanding of the primary/secondary curriculum (adapt as needed).
Ability to manage a classroom and deliver lessons confidently.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
Desirable Criteria

Experience delivering intervention programmes.
Knowledge of SEND and inclusive teaching strategies.
First Aid qualification.
Experience mentoring or leading other support staff.
