Description:
Higher Level Teaching Assistant (1:1 Support) - Sands School
Contract: Fixed Term, expected to end summer 2026 subject to a post-16 agreement.
Sands School is a small independent secondary day school located in the town of Ashburton in the southern edge of the Dartmoor National Park in Devon. We offer genuinely child-centred teaching in small classes within a democratic ethos that fosters trust, mutual respect and self-directed learning.
We are seeking an experienced HLTA to work on a 1:1 basis with two year 11 students with SEND needs. The successful candidate will work with the SEND and teaching teams to provide the support outlined in the student’s EHCPs. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a small school delivering truly personalised support to these two students, as well as to join a unique school community.
The successful candidate will:
* Have experience of supporting learners with SEMH needs and, ideally, of successfully working with diagnoses of ASC, ADHD and anxiety-based issues
* Be able to develop a rapport with the student and be prepared to negotiate individualised styles of learning and support
* Be able to take responsibility for planning, organising and resourcing 1-to-1 support
* Have excellent communications skills and be able to work collaboratively with the student, their parents and their teachers
As well as the supporting the needs outlined in the student’s EHCPs you will have the general responsibilities of an HLTA and will be expected to regularly teach on a one-to-one basis, contribute to reports, work alongside the class teachers and cover lessons where necessary.
As well as being a responsible adult in the school you will be a part of the school community and will be expected to engage with and support all our students, not just those taking your subjects and to participate in the democratic running of the school through the weekly school meetings.
Sands School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
The successful applicant will be required to apply for an enhanced disclosure (with barred list checks) from the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
The post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974 and Exceptions Order 1975, applicants will be required to declare spent and unspent convictions and cautions that are not ‘protected’.
