Location: Cardiff, Cardiff University International Study Centre

Salary: £40,400 - £43,400 per annum (DOE)

The Head of Science will provide the leadership and vision to deliver excellent student success through the development of teaching, learning and assessment, and curriculum innovation in the field of Science, Technology, and Mathematics (STEM); as well as maintaining quality assurance and enhancement that embeds outstanding collaborative working with both the University and the Study Group network.

You will be responsible for leading and supporting a team of STEM tutors, ensuring that all Life Science, Physical Science, Engineering, and Computing modules across all courses and programmes are delivered to a high standard; following the agreed curriculum and utilising agreed assessment modes, resulting in the best possible outcomes for students and the best possible student experience.

Reporting to the Head of Curriculum and Progression, you will work closely with colleagues within and outside CUISC and be accountable for the delivery of contractually required progression rates to the University. Critically, the successful candidate will need to carefully balance the requirements of the Centre alongside the need for compliance, consistency and collaboration with the University and Study Group as a whole.

The successful applicant will support the Head of Centre in the overall management of CUISC, consequently, applicants must have a proven track record of effectively and efficiently running a small to medium-sized academic department, with experience in managing different curriculum pathways, several direct reports and rigorous and robust quality assurance processes.

Engaging and collaborating effectively with the Head of Curriculum and Progression and academic subject tutors is key to the success of the curriculum delivery, and the successful candidate should bring with them a strong desire to take a holistic approach to the student academic experience.

The candidate should also have experience in managing and developing relationships with external stakeholders and partners to improve student outcomes and ensure a positive student experience.

ABOUT THE ROLE

* Collaborate with the Head of Curriculum and Progression to implement a cohesive academic vision, aligning with Study Group’s Vision.

* Contribute to strategic planning, policy development, and problem-solving for areas including HR, academic development, and STEM subject delivery.

* Provide inspirational leadership to drive continuous improvement and achievement of aspirational targets.

* Effectively lead and coordinate STEM pathway teams, ensuring timely and compliant recruitment of Science, Technology, and Maths staff.

* Take responsibility for academic standards and the quality of learning opportunities within the STEM team.

* Contribute to the effective operation of committee meetings, support External Examiner(s), and monitor progress against the Centre Action Plan.

* Contribute to day-to-day management of the ISC, ensuring effective timetabling, assessment scheduling, and collaboration with Subject Leaders.

* Work closely with the Head of Curriculum and Progression to integrate relevant subject developments and ensure the effective use of the Centre’s VLE.

* Monitor Key Performance Indicators in the STEM area, addressing day-to-day issues and contributing to the Centre’s Safeguarding responsibilities.

ABOUT YOU

* Bachelor’s degree and Post-doctoral qualification in a relevant subject (Essential)

* Leadership and management training (Essential)

* Leadership and management experience in a teaching and learning environment (Essential)

* Experience in leading a team to achieve high levels of student academic performance and outcomes against agreed targets

* Experience in delivering a STEM subject to international students in UK Higher or Further Education

* Experience in planning and running complex education courses in STEM.

* Experience in leading the provision of academic skills within HE environments

* Experience in partnership working in the education sector.
