Job Title: Functional Skills English Tutor
Location: Thurrock
Contract: Fixed term until November 2027 – Maternity Cover
Salary: £28,000–£36,000
About the role
We are looking for an experienced Functional Skills English Tutor with a passion for supporting learners with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
The Functional Skills English Tutor will deliver Functional Skills English from Entry Level 1–3 through to Level 1 & 2, working with small groups of up to 12 learners.
Their learners have a range of complex needs, including autism, ADHD, dyslexia, Down syndrome, severe learning difficulties and social communication challenges. This is not a mainstream teaching role and requires someone who is patient, adaptable and confident supporting learners with diverse and high needs.
Key responsibilities
You will:
* Plan and deliver engaging Functional Skills English lessons.
* Teach Entry Level through to Level 2.
* Differentiate learning to meet individual needs.
* Assess and monitor learner progress.
* Support learners to prepare for examinations.
* Maintain accurate learner records and documentation.
* Use creative and practical approaches to engage learners.
* Work closely with the Quality Assurance Team.
* Maintain relevant CPD.
* Follow safeguarding, Prevent and organisational policies.
Essential requirements
* AET, Cert Ed, PGCE or relevant teaching qualification.
* English Grade C/4 or above or Functional Skills Level 2.
* Experience teaching learners with different abilities or learning needs.
* Experience supporting learners with learning differences.
* A patient, flexible and learner-focused approach.
Desirable: Assessor qualification, SEN qualifications and knowledge of EHCPs.
