Business Development Manager. Freight & Logistics
Location: Selby, North Yorkshire
Salary: £40,000. £45,000 depending on experience
OTE: Circa £55,000
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00am. 5:30pm
Working arrangement: Fully office-based
Benefits: Bonus scheme, contributory pension, 22 days' holiday plus bank holidays and a company car after three months
An established freight and logistics business is looking to recruit an experienced Business Development Manager to join its successful sales team in Selby.
This is an excellent opportunity for a confident and commercially focused sales professional who enjoys winning new business, building long-term customer relationships and providing tailored freight solutions.
The successful candidate will sell a range of international air, road and sea freight services, alongside UK warehousing and distribution solutions.
The Role
You will be responsible for developing new business through proactive sales activity, including cold calling, prospecting and face-to-face customer meetings.
Your responsibilities will include:
Identifying and securing new business opportunities
Proactively contacting prospective customers through cold calling and targeted sales activity
Arranging and attending face-to-face customer meetings
Managing and developing relationships with new and existing clients
Understanding customer requirements and recommending suitable freight and logistics solutions
Negotiating with air, road and sea freight suppliers to secure competitive rates
Preparing and submitting accurate customer quotations
Following up quotations and securing trial bookings
Converting trial shipments into long-term commercial relationships
Managing existing customer accounts and maximising their business potential
Working closely with the internal sales and operations teams
Passing clear customer instructions and shipment information to the operations department
Supporting colleagues with quotations, service information and sales development
Recording, reporting and presenting sales activity and performance data to senior management
The Candidate
The ideal candidate will have:
Proven business-to-business sales experience
Previous experience within freight forwarding, transport or logistics
Knowledge of air, road or sea freight services
Strong cold-calling and new-business-development experience
A successful track record of generating leads and closing business
Excellent relationship-building and account-management skills
Strong negotiation and commercial awareness
The confidence to attend customer meetings and present logistics solutions
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Good organisational and time-management abilities
Strong attention to detail
Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office
The ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
A proactive, enthusiastic and self-motivated approach
Strong problem-solving skills
The ability to work independently while supporting a wider team
Package
Basic salary of £40,000. £45,000 depending on experience
Bonus scheme with an OTE of approximately £55,000
Company car provided after three months

22 days' annual leave plus bank holidays
Monday to Friday working hours
