Forensic Accountant (part-time)
Birmingham, West Midlands

Working as part of our Operations Team means playing a crucial role in assessing new entrants into the industry and holding gambling operators to account. The forensic accounting team evaluates immense volumes of data and evidence in relation to the ownership and control of operators and how they are financed. Our advice informs important regulatory decisions, including approving new licence applications, revoking licences and imposing financial penalties. The forensic accounting team also contribute to public consultations and amendments to relevant legislation and guidance.

The Benefits:

- Salary of circa £48,000 to £53,000 (pro rata)
- Civil service pension, with an employer contribution rate of 27%

- Hybrid working, specific guidelines are to be agreed with line manager
- 26 days’ holiday, rising to 29 days after two years’ service, with the option to buy up to five days’ extra annual leave

Key Responsibilities:

It’s about experience. You will be an experienced Forensic Accountant, able to take a straightforward case from inception through to completion. You will also work on complex cases with supervision. You will be able to establish the scope and timescales of projects, gather evidence and analyse data. You will form conclusions with the support of a line manager. You will have the ability to delegate and review tasks when appropriate and manage your time efficiently to meet deadlines.

It’s about being thorough. You will need to be able to conduct detailed examinations of financial statements, statutory filings and other legal and financial documents with a view to identifying anomalies and areas of concern, along with any evidence of regulatory breaches or criminal offending.

It’s about your communication skills. You will need to apply your understanding of corporate structures and financial documents and combine it with your evidence gathering and investigative techniques to produce clear and concise advice to colleagues, both verbally and in writing.

It’s about teamwork. You will be a team player who enjoys collaborating on complex projects. You will have experience of coaching junior colleagues to help them to learn and improve. You will be able to explain financial issues to non-accountants and will collaborate effectively with colleagues from across the organisation, typically from our Licensing, Compliance, Enforcement and Legal teams.

Person Specification

Essential:

- Accountancy qualification and member of accounting body (ACA, ACCA or equivalent) with experience in the Forensic Accounting practice area.
- Background in financial audits, financial reporting systems, accounting standards and procedures.
- Experience carrying out detailed research of a variety of open sources, gathering and analysing complex information with a careful and methodical approach and recording information and preserving evidential integrity.
- Able to prioritise and progress multiple complex projects and deliver the high quality advice within agreed internal and external deadlines.
- Ability to work with a can-do attitude.
- Ability to communicate effectively within the forensic accounting team and with other colleagues.
- Conduct detailed and thorough examinations of financial information with a view to identifying anomalies, areas of concern along with any evidence of regulatory breaches or criminal offending.
- Experience preparing detailed reports documenting findings, analysis, and conclusions in a clear and concise manner.
- Experience drafting expert reports.
- Experience presenting findings and expert opinions to stakeholders including non-accountants.
- Experience liaising with lawyers, witnesses, law enforcement and regulatory bodies.
- Up to date knowledge in respect of changes to accounting standards, regulations, and industry best practices related to forensic accounting.

Desirable:

- Experience within the public sector.
- Experience of regulatory investigations and/or disputes.
- Familiarity with stock exchange filings, trusts, limited partnerships, Limited Liability Companies, Limited Liability Partnerships, and special purpose investment vehicles.
- Knowledge of corporate acquisitions.
