Job Title: Fire Alarm Engineer

Location: Field-based (London & South East / site travel required)

Position Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Reporting To: Active Fire Supervisor & Fire & Security Service Manager

About the Role

We are seeking a skilled and proactive Fire Alarm Engineer with strong technical problem-solving capabilities to join our Active Fire team.

In this role, you will be responsible for planned preventative maintenance (PPM), reactive call-outs, fault-finding, installation, and commissioning across fire alarm systems, smoke control systems, and active fire curtains. You will ensure all systems operate reliably and fully adhere to current British Standards and third-party accreditation schemes, including BS 5839-1:2025, BS 7346-8, BS 8524-1/2, BAFE SP203-1, and IFC codes of practice.

Key Responsibilities

Installation & Commissioning: Install, modify, test, and commission new fire alarm systems, smoke control systems, active fire curtains, and associated field devices to design specifications.

Servicing & PPM: Carry out routine servicing, inspections, and planned preventative maintenance in accordance with BS 5839-1 and BS 7346-8 standards.

Fault Diagnosis & Reactive Repairs: Rapidly troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve complex faults on addressable and conventional systems to minimize customer downtime.

Site Surveys & Cause-and-Effect: Carry out thorough site surveys (with photographic evidence), interpret schematics/zone charts, and program cause-and-effect panel logic.

Compliance & Certification: Issue clear, compliant electronic certification, commissioning records, and detailed service reports via tablet devices.

Van Stock & Operations: Manage vehicle inventory, place stock requisition orders efficiently, and participate in an on-call rota to support emergency call-outs.

Requirements & Qualifications

Essential:

Experience: Minimum 3+ years of experience as a Fire Alarm Engineer covering servicing, fault-finding, and maintenance.

System Knowledge: Hands-on experience across major addressable and conventional manufacturers (e.g., Advanced, Apollo, Kentec, Gent, Hochiki, C-Tec, Morley, EMS, Hyfire).

FIA Certifications:

FIA Fundamentals Units 1 & 2 (Fire Detection & Alarm Systems in Non-Domestic Premises).

FIA Advanced Maintainer Course.

Electrical & Industry Cards:

BS 7671 18th Edition.

FESS (ECS) Systems Operative Card.

Safety Training: Valid certifications in Asbestos Awareness, Manual Handling, Working at Height, and CITB Hazard & Risk Awareness.

Driving Licence: Full UK Manual Driving Licence.

Standards Familiarity: Practical knowledge of BS 5839-1:2025, BS 7346-8 (Smoke Control), BS 8524 (Fire Curtains), and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

Desirable:

NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Providing Electronic Fire and Security Systems.

Direct experience integrating fire alarms with AOV/smoke extract systems and fire curtain assemblies.
