Ferry Crew Mechanical Assistant | Torpoint, Cornwall | Full Time | £35,332 per annum, progressing to £35,923 per annum based on 39 hrs/week (37 hours per week and 2 hours contracted overtime), inclusive of standard shift, evening and weekend working allowances.   

Our client is responsible for the management, operation, maintenance and administration of the two crossings over the River Tamar – Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry. With approx. 26,000 vehicles travelling with them every day, they play an important part in the local infrastructure, creating a link between Plymouth, Devon and South East Cornwall.

They seek to appoint a Ferry Mechanical Assistant to join the team at the Torpoint Ferry. This is a dynamic and safety critical role in a unique environment and an exciting opportunity for a confident individual who has strong written and verbal communications skills, understands basic supervisory management and can routinely demonstrate high levels of customer service to support the delivery of the ferry service within the Ferry Operations team.

The successful candidate will be comfortable working both independently and as part of a team.

You will have experience of working within the marine environment and with marine engineering, experience of managing staff, be adaptable, quick thinking and operate well under pressure. The role requires a strong understanding of health and safety, and excellent customer service skills. Mechanical Assistants are second in command of the vessel and therefore are expected to display people management skills as well as, passenger safety management and routine supervision of the passenger vessel. This includes a significant contribution to the safe, reliable and efficient delivery of the ferry service.

The ferry crews work to a 9 week cyclical rota which consists of early shifts (06:00 – 14:00), late shifts (14:00 – 22:00), as well as one week of consecutive night shifts (22:00 – 06:00) in the cycle. The shifts include weekend, evening and bank holiday working.

Due to the safety critical nature of the roles, Ferry Crews are required to meet a medical standard and are subject to random and for cause drugs and alcohol testing.

Excellent communications skills

Semi-skilled training course to NVQ3 level or in house equivalent
Basic IT skills (email and Office 365 packages)
Demonstrable experience of operating a wide range of machinery & equipment in the marine field (electrical and mechanical)
Ability to take independent decisions and give clear instructions to colleagues when unexpected events occur
Ability to respond positively to changing operational demands
Excellent knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety rules and regulations
What will your role look like?

To start up, shut down and secure ferries in accordance with laid down procedures
Ensure that all tasks and duties are carried out in accordance with current Health and Safety regulations
To accurately record and monitor machinery and systems operating data, assessing against normal parameters using computerised data logging
Conduct and record maintenance and husbandry tasks, as required by the planned maintenance system and the mechanics daily routine, ensuring that any defects are reported in a timely manner and ensuring that all defect reports are correctly filled out with accurate, relevant information
To assist with emergency situations as detailed in the relevant policies and procedures - these duties include pulling of ropes, throwing of lifebuoys, handling of buoyancy aids, carrying and use of fire extinguishers and fire hoses, opening and closing of valves and ability to get through escape hatches and climb a vertical escape ladder from the engine room
