Family Support & Mediation Worker

We are seeking a Family Support & Mediation Worker to help young people and families experiencing conflict rebuild relationships and prevent homelessness.

About the Role

This is a rewarding opportunity to work directly with young people aged 11 to 25 and their families, providing practical support and mediation during periods of conflict, crisis or relationship breakdown.

You will manage a small caseload, helping families improve communication, resolve difficulties and build stronger relationships. The aim is to intervene early, reduce family breakdown and help prevent young people from becoming homeless.

Working across the North East, you will build strong relationships with young people, families, schools and other professionals.

Key responsibilities include:

Providing family support and mediation to young people and their families
Managing a small caseload and developing individual support plans
Completing risk and needs assessments
Helping families improve communication and work through conflict
Supporting young people to remain safely within their family or support network wherever appropriate
Working closely with schools, local authorities, homelessness services and other agencies
Developing referral pathways and building relationships with partner organisations
Responding appropriately to safeguarding concerns
Maintaining accurate case records and monitoring outcomes

This is a mobile role requiring independent travel across the North East.

About You

You will have experience supporting young people, families or individuals experiencing challenging circumstances and will be confident building relationships with people who may be experiencing conflict or crisis.

You will also have:

Experience managing a caseload or providing one-to-one support
Strong communication and relationship-building skills
Experience of risk assessment, support planning or safeguarding
The ability to remain impartial and calm in difficult situations
Confidence working independently and with external agencies
Good organisation and case-recording skills
A strengths-based, solution-focused approach

You do not need to already hold a mediation qualification. Full training will be provided, including support to complete the Level 4 Interpersonal Mediation Practitioner's Certificate during your probation period.

Experience of family mediation, youth work, family support or homelessness prevention would be particularly welcome.
